A real treat, well done

David Todd pulls off the difficult task of getting people to talk about themselves and their work while not getting in the way. It's great to read interviews with the likes of modern guitar explorers including Richard Thompson, Bob Mould, Tom Verlaine, and my favorite, Keith Levene.

Some of the discussion focus on the playing, others on events and circumstances, but all are interesting. Todd steers the discussions well.

There's not a whole lot of gear-head nuts-and-bolts details; what you get is insight into how some musical pioneers think about their craft.

Conversations with Guitar Antiheroes

This book is a must-read for guitarists and music lovers who feel alienated by the gear and technique fetish of most guitar-related publications. It's a series of thoughtful, extended interviews with a idiosyncratic guitars from the proto-punk (Lenny Kaye, Wayne Kramer), art-punk (Tom Verlaine!, Lee Ranaldo), no-wave, post-punk (Johnny Marr!), and sui generis (Richard Thompson!) traditions. If you are interested in strange, noisy, sometimes lovely guitar sounds made in deliberate opposition to the blues-rock guitar hero tradition, you will likely find something interesting in this book. It should be sufficient just to list a few more names, with exclamation points: Bob Mould! J. Mascis! Both Kim and Kelley Deal! Michio Kurihara! Michael Rother! I also learned about several musicians I've not heard but whose interviews make me curious enough to seek out. Very little in the way of gear or technique discussion, but Mr. Todd is a very well-informed interviewer, much like Simon Reynolds. Even if you're not a guitar obsessive, this goes well on a bookshelf next to Our Band Could Be Your Life and Reynolds' book of post-punk interviews. Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see a second volume (might I suggest Carrie Brownstein, Nels Cline, Johnny Greenwood?)

Blah, a guitarist book. It probably consists of the same people repeating the same stuff over again, and photos of them in macho poses....well, NOT THIS ONE. This is a set of interviews with 26 guitarists who are making their own rules; of both genders. Unique, insightful and deep.

One of the Best Books on Horseracing in recent years

This book is loaded with great insight from some of the best tournament players in the horse racing community, many of which are friends of mine and also just overall superb handicappers. You don't have to be a contest player to benefit from the words of the numerous successful players that Peter interviews in this book. Learn how some of these guys attack a given card and what they look for to search out winning longshots. Highly recommended if you are into playing the horses for fun or profit.

Although I am an experienced contest player I definitely found this book helpful. If I was an inexperienced player looking to get into contests this would be my first investment. Author does a good job of getting different viewpoints and strategies from different players. His own passion for the material definitely comes through. Again a must read for experienced and inexperienced players alike.

Love me some Poseidon

Poseidon has always been my favorite of the 3 brothers so it is not surprising that I actually liked this book better than book 1. I loved him in Zeus and was glad he was still the mostly sane brother. And although I did like Audrey, I was also disappointed in her. I'm not sure she was a strong enough match for him. Overall, there wasn't anything wrong with her...she came across as sensitive, sweet, nice, etc. but until the end, not someone who could handle or stand up for /to the God of the Seas.

As a side note, there were some grammatical errors (extra works, missing words, etc.). And, similar to the first book, although I like the style to a certain extent, I'm not sure a God acting like a typical twenty something is realistic either.

I think this was my favorite of The God Chronicles books. Poseidon and Audrey's story was so passionate. It left me definitely wanting more.

Poseidon, God of the Sea, has a vendetta against Odysseus. Odysseus is reincarnated in the body of John, Audrey's husband. When John dies at sea, Audrey's life comes crashing down around her. Later, as she's learning to live again, she meets Sy. Not only does Sy save Audrey's life but he ends up falling in love with her. However, Audrey is still pining over her dead husband.

I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend the complete series. They are a quick read and safe for young adult readers as well, seeing as how there are no graphic sexual situations.

Better than Zeus

I liked this book so much better than Zues . Especially when it came to Audreys grieving. I really felt for her but I dislike how the gods are so normal through out the whole book n only showed their true colors at the end. The book couldve been a regular romance if it wasnt for Poseidons first chapter and the ending. I also think towards the end it got really messy. Like the author had too many ideas and they didnt flow out correctly. Im hoping Hades will change my mind about the serious. If not, then I think I'll be done there

adresses a key gap in existing literature

In recent years, more and more information has been made available on the epidemic of childhood sexual abuse. However, despite the proliferation in professional and self-help literature on the topic, there are still important gaps, and Shaw's book represents an empowering attempt at addressing one of those gaps. There is little information out there on sibling abuse, even though studies have shown that it is likely even more common than adult-child abuse. Shaw's anthology gives voice to survivors of brother-sister incest. The writings and visual art of survivors underline the catastrophic effects this particular kind of childhood sexual abuse has on the victims, yet, they also show the immense amount of resilience and strength in the women who contributed to the book.

The stories can be triggering to read, but at the same time they finally provide recognition of a type of abuse that so often goes unnoticed. This is an immensely important and empowering book.

"Speaking up and speaking out changes everything."

This line in Risa Shaw's complex and beautifully-composed anthology on brother-sister sexual abuse perfectly captures the power of this little gem of a book.
Shaw has collected the voices and art of 35 survivors, and she let's them speak up and out in complex and non-homogenized ways. The editing for this volume is beautiful, as the brief pieces are clear but not in any way standardized in content or form. Here you will meet women who explode with unequivocal rage, stories of girls who told and girls who kept quiet, families who stopped it and (many more) families who didn't, women who have patiently and lovingly cultivated honest adult relationships with their former abusers, women whose demands for truth have cost them their families, and women whose deeply complicated and ambivalent memories make room simultaneously for shame, hurt, fear, and pleasure.
I do not *agree* with every analysis that's offered in this book, but why should I? There is such a glorious chorus of smart voices here that invites a great new level of discussion to commence on this severely under-discussed topic. For example, Margaret Randall writes "Brother-sister incest is not about sex. It is not about pleasure. It is about power, pure and simple" (foreword, p. 2). I think that's too simple - I read many of the pieces in the book as demonstrating how brother-sister sexual abuse is so damaging precisely because it IS about sex and pleasure at the same time that it is about power. Deep, systematic power imbalances distort both girls' and boys' experiences of pleasure and sexual development. I welcome the opportunity to have this discussion, finally! Brava to Risa Shaw and the many contributors. And one additional note: the book is worth it for the Action Girl Figures alone. Simply brilliant!

Oustanding, ground-breaking work :)

This anthology is an amazing work. After decades of silence about the issue of brother-sister incest, we finally have a book that is as inspiring as it is informative. The anthology includes writing and artwork drawn from 35 women. This is not a book about victims. It is a book about survivors-- about strong women who learned to say no, who learned to speak out against this often-ignored form of violence in hopes that future generations of children could be protected.
I found the book an exhilerating roller-coaster ride of emotions, ranging from raw, unbridled anger, to eventual healing and a sense of wholeness. This is a book written for everyone. It includes powerful short stories, poetry, and visual artwork. It will make you angry, it will make you sad, and it will leave you in awe at the resilence of the human spirit. But the one thing it won't do is leave you untouched.

About the Author

Barbara A. Turner, PhD, teaches sandplay and play therapy to mental health clinicians internationally and serves as consultant to practicing sandplay and play therapists. She is the author of The Handbook of Sandplay Therapy. She lives in Cloverdale, California. Kristín Unnsteinsdóttir is the director of the Learning Center at a small grammar school in Iceland. Thomas L. Armstrong is an award-winning author and speaker with more than 35 years of teaching experience from the primary through the doctoral level. He is the author of 14 books, including ADD/ADHD Alternatives in the Classroom, The Human Odyssey: Navigating the Twelve Stages of Life, and The Power of Neurodiversity: Unleashing the Advantages of Your Differently Wired Brain, and a former contributing editor to Mothering and more than 20 other periodicals, journals, and books.
