From Ancient Greek Rhetoric to the modern day

This is just a book for business communication as the title implies. I particularly enjoyed the references to the Greek style of rhetoric, because they mention things that can be useful.

A good book, and an easy read for someone wanting to freshen up on their business rhetoric or preparing for a class on business communications.

I originally had it for a business rhetoric class, however, I think it will stay with me as a good reference book for a while.

Once again Nicole O'Dell tactfully dealt with a difficult subject. Witchcraft is something most people either don't believe exists or try to ignore. But it is very real and not something to be ignored or taken lightly. Nicole did a great job of showing just how easy it can be to get drawn into this evil practice and how hard it is to escape once you are trapped. Everything was well done, the plot, characters, and the message. I love how this author presents these hard to talk about subjects in a way that clearly depicts them but keeps it to a place where a more sightly younger audience can still read them. YA at its finest

WOW. I've been looking forward to this book for awhile and wasn't disappointed at all. Now I'm just disappointed the series is over!

I love that Nicole openly tells in the author notes of the novel about her own experience as a teen at Teen Challenge. Her experience there clearly rings true and sincere in her novels in a way that other authors couldn't even touch. Nicole KNOWS - and PRACTICES - what she's preaching here, and the best part about it is that it doesn't come off as preaching at all! I highly recommend any of Nicole's YA novels for the teen in your life.

*Disclaimer** This particular novel is hardcore. It's great on so many levels, but it's definitely not a light, fluffy read to hand to a teen to skim on their beach blanket this summer. This is serious content and should be treated as such. (the occult, spiritual warfare, demonic influences, suicide, death, etc.) I personally felt a little heavy at times while reading it, just relating to the character. Not to scare readers away, because I firmly believe teens SHOULD read this. It's just a bit of a catch 22, because while this book clearly presents what could happen and often does happen when teens (or anyone) dabbles in the occult, and serves as a warning thereof and offers light to escape the darkness, it could also have the reverse affect and entice a spiritually scoffing teen to try things out or "give them ideas" if they don't take it seriously. I'm so glad Nicole included Scripture and the Plan of Salvation and prayer in the back of the book. Awesome!

I'm so proud of Nicole for tackling subject matter most authors would shy away from (and sadly, most preachers do as well in the church today) This is subject matter that should NEVER be ignored. Because it's real and its happening in teens' lives today - adults looking the other way is as good as pushing our teens into the darkness. Unacceptable!

So please pray over your teen before, during and after they read this story, and discuss it with them and get their thoughts on the subject matter. I believe God can and will use this story to do big things in the hearts of teenagers!

A powerful book dealing with the occult

"Ghostlike memories haunted her around every corner. She darted in and out of rooms, before the bells rang or after classes started so she could avoid Austin. A spirit wolf followed at her hells most of the day. Was this her life, or was she acting in some twisted made-for-cable movie? Escape."

Summary: Melanie is dead. Doesn't even "cast a shadow" anymore as she shouted to her dad. With her death comes Joy's death it seems. She barely eats anything anymore. She barely smiles. She barely functions. Melanie was her best friend! It shouldn't have happened this way! It wasn't worth it! He wasn't worth it! Joy would have given up her boyfriend in an instant if it meant keeping her best friend alive. But it's too late. So now Joy has to find a way to cope. Nice "chuchry" sounding answers aren't doing it for her. She needs serious hope, and now! So when a friend introduces her to ojjua boards and Melanie speaks to her, Joy is hooked. At last she's found a way to get peace again and not have to be so afraid all the time. Or has she?
Notes: This is the third book in the Diamond Estates novels, a series about a kind of rehab and healing center for teen girls. Each book takes a young girl with a serious problem and shows how only through finding Jesus and getting support and making changes in their life, can they find the healing they so desperately need. In this one, a girl has just had her best friend commit suicide over her guilt for pursuing Joy's boyfriend. Desperate for answers, she turns to the occult, getting deeper and deeper into it. She receives a "spirit guide" who goes everywhere with her, to protect her from her fear. She soon realizes that the occult is a very dangerous thing and that the forces of evil will stop at nothing to control you once you have given them power. This is not a good book for a younger teen. The main character actually witnesses the forces of evil killing a person, convincing her for a time that they are more powerful than God. The workers at Diamond Estates explain that they are protected due to their salvation, but that Joy is not, nor was the person whose death she witnesses. It has a few scenes that are very disturbing. However, I recommend it for any who are old enough and mature enough emotionally to start learning about the struggle between God and the powers of evil. It's a good series for someone who needs to see a realistic portrayal of the struggles a teen girl faces and where hope can come from.

When 17 year old Joy Christianson's BFF Melanie commits suicide, Joy's life spirals out of control. When Joy is betrayed by her best friend and her boyfriend, she is hurt. But a life-long friendship is worth more than a boyfriend, so hours later Joy seeks out Melanie only to discover her friend has ended her life because of remorse.

As Joy struggles to come to terms with Melanie's death she begins dabbling various aspects of occultism and witchcraft. As Joy goes against her beliefs in her attempts to contact Melanie her friends and family are left wondering what happened to the once happy joyful young woman.

But as Joy goes further into the spiritual as searches for peace she takes a spirit guide who may cost her her very soul and lead her down the same path as Melanie. Diamond Estates is Joy's last hope but only is she can admit the danger she is in and will call upon the Lord.

Whenever Joy tries to turn from the path she is on something happens that convinces her that she will never escape. Death is following her every move, can she embrace the gift of eternal life that is before her?

The Shadowed Onyx deals with the issue of suicide in a thoughtful way and it looks at the ramifications on those that are left to deal with the loss. This title also looks at the powerful draw Satanic worship has on those who are searching for answers. But most important is the power of the cross and sincere heartfelt prayer of both the seeker and the believer.

The Shadowed Onyx would be an excellent addition to any library and an excellent conversation starter between parents and children when dealing with these sensitive issues.

It should go without saying that if someone is going to create a successful business for themselves it requires a great deal of initiative, resolve, determination, solid work ethic, imagination and just plain hard work and effort. If you possess ALL of those qualities then this book might offer something for you. In that case I'd suggest you "go for it" and give it a try.

Some good ideas but be prepared to spend a lot of time on this before you make any money; it's not easy

This may be a good start for people who want to start writing articles and make money from them. There are some good ideas in here... however, here are some important downsides:

* It's not easy to start writing articles and to make money from them. There are a few "superstars" but these are the exceptions.
* It's quite difficult for a new & unknown website to start ranking well on the search engines above sites that are much more popular and established.
* If you have any chance of succeeding at this, you'll have to put in A LOT of time and effort into it. Do you have the time needed and are you able and willing to do this work for free until you start making money from your articles and your blog (if you do at all)?
* You better be able to write or obtain a lot of good quality content that stands out from most of the other stuff already out there if you have any chance at succeeding. It's probably best to only write about the things you know best.
* The book even talks about the "staggering failure rate" that people report as normal for this type of "make money online" endeavor.
* I was also not happy that at the beginning of the book it offers a "free report". I gave my name and email address to get the free report and instead all I got was an invitation to get on another mailing list, which I didn't want to. I never got the "free report". This seems like a dishonest attempt to get you on a mailing list which the author never mentions is required to get the "free report".
* In case it's not clear from the above, let me clarify: It's not as easy to make money online by writing articles, selling products, and making commissions as this book may lead you to believe.

About the Author
Mogens Trolle Larsen is Emeritus Professor of Assyriology at the University of Copenhagen. He has written books and articles on Assyriology and archaeology, and has edited a number of volumes. His book, The Conquest of Assyria: Excavations in an Antique Land, was published in 1996. He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, Academia Europea, and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

Expensive, but a superb example of how detailed analysis can enlighten our understanding of history

Given the high price and esoteric subject matter of this book, it's not surprising that there aren't m(any) reviews as of Jan. 2016. It's too bad that the price is so high, because the book would be interesting to a moderate number of general readers with an interest in micro-history, the process of building up our understanding of the past by using the details of ordinary life. I'm a general reader, not an academician with a speciality in the ancient Near East, and I never would have sprung for it myself. My wife bought it for me after I read her an excerpt published in a NY Times review.

Science and the ability to quickly and inexpensively extract analysis from large amounts of data has made it possible to recalibrate our view of history by looking at details. Bone analysis tells us where people lived based on the isotopes preserved in their bones form the water they drank. DNA tells us when one tribe or people moved into contact with another and produced mutual offspring. Dating the rings on trees makes it possible to date buildings constructed with wood beams. Using a computer to cross-reference known events like eclipses and the reigns of monarchs with documents such as letters, lists of items in a caravan or ship, and IOUs from an early era make it possible to set the chronology of the events recounted in the documents, including events that were not momentous except perhaps to the individuals who left the documents. Computers applied to linguistics helps trace the migration of people who spoke a given language. If you're a history geek, this is a wonderful time to be alive, and it's going to get better and better.

"Ancient Kanesh" is a foretaste of how much better history is going to get. It is a reconstruction of the life and times of a merchants' colony of Assyrians who originated in Iraq and who lived 600 miles to the north, in central Anatolia, not all that far from the capital of Turkey. It uses an analysis of thousands of clay tablets left behind by those merchants to trace their commerce, but it also traces their family lives and sheds some light on their societies. (For example, the names of some of their daughters are recorded in a way that indicates they may have had a role outside the narrowest confines of the home.) Because of the volume of clay tablets -- more than 10,000 in the database in the author's university -- and the slow process of translating them from Old Assyrian, this analysis a work in progress. It's been going on in universities for perhaps 150 years, but it's really taken off in the last few decades, partly because of the tools that science and computers have given to historians.

The author is a Dane who studied at the University of Chicago and for some reason was attracted to the tiny sub-speciality of Old Assyria. He's written a book that seems to be a capstone to his long career of studying life in 2000 to 1500 BCE. He's drawn many, many conclusions but has the good sense to draw them somewhat tentatively, recognizing that new material plus the translation and publication of already discovered material will mean his conclusions need to be modified. And he's non-dogmatic. At one point he comments that there are competing chronologies of events that differ by a few decades, but that when you're looking back 4,000 years, it doesn't really matter much that you're working with a margin of error of +/- 30 years. If he takes pride in anything, its pride in his modesty and common sense, which is sometimes missing among academics who have done landmark research in a narrow academic field.

One thing he does take a stand on is his conclusion that contrary to what some historians and economists have speculated, there was a robust market economy in commodities like tin and textiles. We've been brought up (or at least I have) to think that the economies of Mesopotamian and Egyptian kingdoms were command economies. The center collected grain as taxes and redistributed it as a way of obtaining services. And the central authority set the rate of exchange between grain and other products. That may be true for grain, but Professor Larsen demonstrates that there was a robust trade from Asur in northern Iraq up into Anatolia and that traders were in business to make a profit, and that the rate of exchange between the commodities they traded fluctuated. In fact it was the fluctuations that gave the traders an opportunity to make a profit through arbitrage. He might also have pointed out that there was substantial trade between regions -- from Mesopotamia into Iran and along the Persian Gulf coast down to Oman, at the very least. It seems very unlike that "international" trade in a wide range of both raw materials and man-made objects could have been subjected to the centralized control of a command economy, although the trade could certainly have been taxed by the central authority.

The writing is somewhat dense and quite detailed, and there are a few things that could have been explained better for the sake of general readers. For example, the concept of eponyms -- who were selected to run the affairs of Kanesh annually for a year, rather like Roman consuls -- should have been explained early in the book, not 100+ pages in. But anyone who's sufficiently interested in getting into this kind of detailed history will be able to get through it because Professor Larsen has done such a good job providing perspective. With that perspective, we can visualize in our minds the activities of the people who left the commercial, legal and family documents in the form of those thousands of clay tablets. Moreover, we can recognize ourselves. For example, a commercial disruption that seems analogous to the 2008 financial crisis may have overtaken the Assyrian merchants in Kanesh almost 4000 years ago. The Biblical prophet Jeremiah warns against the power of the Assyrian Empire 1100 years later, and one surprise for me learn that Asur, the mother city of Kanesh and linked in my mind to Assyria, was just a trading city in 1800 BCE. The book's hypotheses about how the city was run and the way its trading colonies were managed uses the analysis of thousands of clay tablets found in Kanesh. The structure of this trading colony bears more than a passing resemblance to the merchants' colonies of the Middle Ages and the settlements of European merchants in the Far East.

All in all, this is an intelligent and well-written piece of historical analysis of an ancient merchant society that looks pretty familiar in surprising ways.

Too bad

Started out well and quickly turned into a Torah Keepers false teaching and belief system, CULT! Heresy filled. They hate grace and want there followers to continue under the Law of Moses, which for believers in Yahshua, is no longer. We are under the law of Yahshua of grace and truth given to all who believe. The Torah is not dead. Those who are under the Torah will be judged by the Torah. They should be prepared to be judged by every law. If they break one, they break them all. Compact!

When I first got the commentary, I thought this is smaller than I thought it was. So at first after looking closer I lover the feel of the hard book softcover's feel. Instead of looking for the bad things about it. I looked to the good points. The first was beside the soft cover. Was the thick pages so the words did not bleed through. It summarized the books, chapter, and verses. It also used other different bible translations to help you understand the verses. I haven't read the whole set just the first book. Yes! it's like the cover says Layman's Bible Commentary.

Start Where You Are At

We just got done looking at Goldie Hawn’s “10 Mindful Minutes: A Journal” and here I am back, BAM, with “Start Where You Are: A Journal for Self-Exploration” by Meera Lee Patel. Trust me, these two journals are totally different from one another, so you’re going to want to keep reading.

Patel’s journal comes from a unique, but familiar perspective. How often have you put change on hold because things weren’t where you thought they should be for you to make that change? I’ve done. Patel, the author, has done. Odds are good that you’ve done, or maybe you’re doing it now. “Start Where You Are” encourages you to stop looking, and waiting, for that other day, and to instead start where you are. Her journal asks probing, thought provoking questions to help you find out more about yourself: what you really love, your motivations, how see yourself and how you feel others perceive you, and more. However she does mix it up. Sometimes the journal will just ask a question for you to answer, but other times you’re drawing pictures, or filling in circles or other shapes, or coloring in a drawing.

Along with her journaling exercises, Patel includes inspiring quotes from a variety of sources. Since she’s an accomplished artist, with lines of stationary sold in boutiques, the quotes are presented in colorful, whimsical fonts, suitable for framing (if you’re willing to cut them out of the book).

It can be difficult to think about yourself and your desires, particularly if you think they’re unattainable. Artist and author Meera Lee Patel does her best to make the journey a painless and playful one.

I loved journals like this one

I ordered 2 of these journals for both of my nieces, ages 17 and 14. When I was growing up, I loved journals like this one. I think it's important that teenagers explore their hopes and dreams and innermost thoughts, and it's even better if they put it on paper. Now that I'm 30, I have so many journals like this one to look back on. I cringe at some of the comments I wrote in those things, but I also smile and become teary-eyed at others. It's fascinating to look back at some of my dreams and to realize I've accomplished them and to marvel at the unique path my life has taken. I wanted to give both of my nieces a similar experience. I didn't want to buy them something that they'll use for a year or so and toss out when something new and more exciting comes along. I thought that this would make a perfect gift because it's something that hopefully they keep for years and can reflect back on as adults. I've included a note in each journal that says something to that extent and lets them know how proud I am of both of them and that I love them.

Now on to the book itself - first off, the artwork is gorgeous. Some of the drawings (they're more like paintings) are absolutely frame-worthy. They appeal to both adult women and teens because they're somewhat whimsical while still giving off a modern feel. The colors are so vivid and bright, they almost jump out at you. The quotes are all very thought-provoking. And the prompt questions really got me thinking myself... so often in life, we forget to explore ourselves, to ask ourselves important questions. We get caught in the rat race, in our everyday hectic schedules and we lose ourselves. Even though I bought this journal for my teenage nieces, it's certainly something that I'd consider purchasing for myself as well. It really does appeal to women of all ages.

It would also make a great meditation companion. As a writer, I find writing to be very meditative. It really assists me in my daily breathing exercises and meditation sessions. It helps me to clear my head, to focus on nothing but myself for a few minutes. I usually use a blank notebook, but this journal would be even more helpful.

Buy this for all the women in your life who need a little bit of inspiration or encouragement, and then treat yourself to one as well!

Liu Zi Jue is also known as "the Six Healing Sounds", "the Six Qi Method" and "the Six Word Secret". This is a classical system first written down in the sixth centruy. Originally, the practice was a breathing exercise using the six sounds but later body movements were added to the practice. The book and DVD give the most comprehensive description of how to make the sounds correctly. There are very specific instructions on how to position the mouth, teeth and tongue and, of course, you hear the correct sound on the DVD. The DVD is very professionally and beautifully done and is one of the best that I have seen. The practitioners demonstrating the forms are clearly very experienced and are excellent models to follow. I have been in pain for many years, not so much now. I am so glad to have discovered these exercise routines.

I really like the setup of this Book/DVD training routine. I have been in pain for two decades, not so much now. While deployed overseas, I had my knee injured, I had my foot injured. I come home and I injure my back, then my neck. I tried to get back into shape, I tried returning to the workout routines that I grew up doing, that the Military taught me. I tried, and because of the pain, it was not possible. In a desperate last attempt to try anything, Several months ago I discovered Chi Kung aka. QiGong, I didn't believe that it would work, but I bought a book. About month later I bought a QiGong DVD on Ba Duan Jin "Eight Pieces of Brocade", and it helped. I no longer have to wear braces on my knees, my back may still be stiff, but it does not hurt all the time, my neck is better, I can now turn my head to the left without pain, I no longer dread what needs to be done. I purchased Liu Zi Jue, put in the DVD as soon as I got home, checked out the set up of the instruction, I started in on the book, and I must say that I am impressed with how well it is lined up, easy to follow, the book not only shows how to do the routines, but explains the common mistakes, and you can actually follow along with the DVD, reading the book as they demonstrate, then in a different section of the DVD you can get up and follow along. Being able to engage every style of learning method, seeing, hearing, and doing. I seldom give 5 stars to anything, so when I say that I love it, I mean, I recommend this to the people that I know, and who trust me. If you are looking for a low impact, high result workout, that is adaptable to your specific needs.... I would encourage you to give this a try. The layout of the book is easy to follow, the matching DVD flows with the book, and then goes on to allow you to be able to get up and follow along and do the routines too. I am so glad to have discovered these exercise routines, and I am very happy with the way the book, and DVD allow a person to learn and adopt to the needs of the users. I now look forward to doing the 20-30 minute routines, not because I enjoy working out, but because I get such good results from doing these Chi Kung "QiGong" routines. Liu Zi Jue would be a great introduction to the elderly of those who have been recovering from a major illness and want a soft gentle flowing workout routine. This is one of a four book/DVD set, but you only need one to get started, all others are optional.
