About the Author
Jacob's career in the games industry spans fourteen years, but he has been programming games as an amateur and professional now for a quarter of a century. During this time he has worked on over a dozen published games for all the major console platforms, including as the lead programmer of the cult British game, Hogs of War. He has programmed, designed and project-managed titles for publishers like Gremlin, Infogrames, Atari, Disney and Konami and he truly knows the meaning of the word "crunch".
Somehow he also found time to study a Ph.D. in the psychology of learning and has a passion for most things that connect video games and learning (including a whole lot of research involving zombies: zombiedivision.co.uk). This passion also extends to teaching game development, which he practices in his position as Senior Lecturer in Game Development at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK.

Great Book, But Needs Updating To GameMaker:Studio

This book bears a notice, "Copyright 2006-2013," so I assume it came out in 2006, long before GameMaker:Studio's 2012 release. As such, it includes Game Maker 8 on its CD, and the text refers to that version. Which would be fine if the only differences were that GameMaker:Studio includes more features than Game Maker 8 did, but that's not the case. The "Sleep" and "Show High Score" actions no longer exist, but are used in the instructional games and text, nonetheless.

Now, "sleep" functions of one kind or another have probably been used by generations of programmers who needed their continuous-action, real-time games to present a certain pace or timing to the player. Alas, a lot of those programmers were writing single-threaded, sequential-execution code (you know: FOR X=0 TO 359 STEP 5, and so on). In our current era of event-driven, multi-threaded software, "sleep" functions tend simply to muck things up. What we used to do with sleep, we now do with timers (what Game Maker calls "alarms"). That's a big step forward, but it plays havoc with the learning process when the text you are working from expects you to add a "Sleep" action in the middle of a list of actions, and you don't have that action available, nor do you know how you would get around it with Alarms (since those aren't introduced for another 80 pages and, even then, they are used to invoke the "Show High Scores" action, which, again, no longer exists).

So, I hope the authors will update the book to match the current version of the product. That said, let me go on to say that I _really_ hope they will do so, as this is otherwise a very, very good book. If you already know how to program, but find the GM IDE baffling, the examples will help you calm down and get focused. If you already know how to program, but find the immense list of GM functions and the large variety of ways to do things daunting, the examples will help you calm down and feel secure. But, if you don't already know how to program, this book may frustrate you, unless you limit yourself to the GM8 product on the included CD. I wouldn't recommend doing that, however, as you will then be "learning" methods that are already obsolete and simply _will not work_ when you start using GameMaker:Studio.

Ignoring the technical details, the book's methodological approach to game programming is very enlightening. I've written, oh, maybe a billion ( 8-) ) lines of code for computer graphics applications of one kind or another. Gaming is something I'm new at, however, and I've only been doing object-oriented programming for about four years now. So, when one example showed how to animate a character on the screen so it smoothly moves from one position to the next by replacing it with an instance of a different object, having that object's position remain unchanged, but animating its graphic appearance to make it look like it was moving, then replacing it with an instance of the original object but in the new location, well... that was an "aha!" moment for me.

Overall, a fine book. I will definitely be buying the sequel soon. But, until it is updated to reflect the actions available in the current version of GameMaker:Studio, I have to say it should be used only by people who already know how to program basic event-driven code, and who at least know what multi-threading is.

Great to learn but needs to be updated

I bought this book already knowing about game maker and wanting to learn more. The book itself is well written and guides you through step by step to create 9 games each one progressively adding more depth and work to accomplish. It teaches you the basics and even at the end of each chapter tells you to tinker with the game you just made and see what you can add to it and gives some hints which I personally thought was pretty cool. The only downside is this book uses gamemaker 8 which is included on the cd but game maker is currently at the time of me writing studio 1.2. Some of the drag and drop functions needed for the book are no longer included such as the sleep function and the show highscore function. However this is to help make the games created with the software easier to distribute across multiple platforms I.E. Android, Apple, Etc. You can easily google and find workarounds to these problems and alot of the solutions are on the yoyogames website itself as well so its not to big of a problem but something that buyers need to know beforehand. So i would like to see the book updated to game maker studio but as mentioned before you can use workarounds which will help sharpen your skils even more. All in all this is a great book and a good starting point for learning how to use game maker and i would recommend it to anyone who is interested in game maker.

Good but outdated.

This book is quite good but it is based on an older version of Game Maker. It often instructs you to do things that are no longer possible like "Show Highscore" and "Sleep". So the three stars is based on the fact that it is outdated for Game Maker's newest version. But beyond that, it is a great tutorial for building games and introducing concepts gradually.

There are many different versions of this classic book available for download here on amazon. As a matter of fact I had purchased a different kindle version of this book and was about 25% of the way through it when I came across this version. I was intrigued by the offer of 'included audio files' for each chapter, so I thought 'what the heck' and spent the .99 to download this version as well. Well, WOW, I'm glad I did! I REALLY enjoy reading the chapter and then listening to that same chapter being read to me by Shawn Penning ... who has one of the nicest voices I've yet to hear read to me (and I listen to 'lots' of audiobooks!). I wish he could read my entire collection to me. :-) Anyway, this particular kindle book/audio is excellent and I intend on 'gifting' this product to quite a few of my friends.

When I was reading through some of the other reviewers comments I noticed that some had remarked that there were problems with the formatting. I read my kindle books on my laptop, my desktop, and on my iPhone. I have opened this book on all three and the formatting is perfect ... so perhaps if there was a problem originally, it has since been corrected.

For fellow customers who might need a little help with the audio files:
If you want to download/save all of the audio files to your computer, do this:
1) find your way to the very END of the book (that is where you will find the links to the audio files)
2) click the 1st link (eg.:Think And Grow Rich Chap 1 HQ )... this will cause a browser window to open and a little audio player app will appear in the middle of the screen and the mp3 should begin to play. Place your cursor over top of the area with the long horizontal bar with the dot that moves to the right as the audio plays *right-click* your mouse. You should see the option: Save as... Click that and save the file to your computer. Then go back to your kindle book, click the next link and repeat the steps until you have saved all of the audio files.

Great content but horrible format, see recommendation.

Yes this is the Original edition and is worthy of five stars for the content, there is no denying or disputing that. However, my beef is with the format of this version. I took a picture so you can see what i am referring to. The book could have been reduced to half it's size in volume and thickness due to the way the Napolean Hill foundation formatted this book. It is off centered where there is about an inch of blank space on top, 2 inches of blank space from left and bottom. The words go in too deep into the center of page and results in an awkward and annoying read. Taking these facts into consideration, you are basically getting a mass market paperback book. After a little more research i came across this edition: ISBN 1593302002. It is also the original edition from 1937 but also contains extensive footnotes, endnotes, appendices, and an index. It is a much better physical book overall in size and feel as well as better fonts, format, and quality of paper. I would recommend that version over this one.
Another issue is with the Kindle version of this edition by the Napoleon Hill foundation. Compared to any other e-book, the font is light with hardly any contrast whatsoever. Text is light gray instead of black which makes it very diffcult to read, you can see for yourself by sampling the book to your Kindle before purchasing which I recommend anyone do before making any e-book purchase. The Napoleon Hill foundation needs to fix this.

Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy

Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy, rather set in a conversational tone. This book explains how to feel a little more at ease when talking to the opposite sex, and confidence really does attract interest. There are a few spots in this book that made me giggle, I like when the author speaks candidly about a situation or subject matter. I am a bit awkward at times when communicating with people in general, so this book definitely gave me points to think about and try to improve on. This review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

The Science of Attraction is a must read for anyone who is having trouble in the relationship department. It goes into detail on different things that we each look for in creating a lasting relationship. Having access to this book some 20+ years ago might have saved me from a divorce or two. People today are more in touch with technology than each other so they can really benefit from reading this book and learning what to look for and/or avoid in a potential life partner.

This is written to give you tips on how to flirt and attract the opposite sex. these is an easy read and the tips are easy to take and make your own and use yourself. I fnd that this books flows nicely and you just keep just readu=ing and finding new tips to use to get the results that you want to accomplish. These is a book with tips that you can easily use and not feel that you are cheesy or obvious that you are using tips from a book. I received this free in exchange for an honest review.

GOOD FOR BEGINNERS BUT BEWARE...

This book gives sound advice on only playing the two lowest house percentage bets, pass line and come line, but does a poor job of explaining the don't pass and don't come. It assumes that everyone is a "right bettor". The advice on setting strict loss limits is very valuable to most players who lack discipline. You will learn to preserve your bankroll if you strictly follow the author's advice to walk away when the rules say so. It's not easy. My main criticism is that the suggested session money is way too low for the style of play suggested. It leaves too much freedom for undisciplined players. The power betting schedule is way too aggressive for most players. Once you get into the betting progression, taking double odds on 4-10's calls for way too much money at risk. This is reckless money management. You might break the bank once in a while, but you'll lose a huge bet on the inevitable 7-out at the end of that hot roll. There are smarter ways to manage even a very hot shoot. And there are better books on craps.

Excellent betting strategies

The power betting strategy is pays for the book probably thousands of times over. What puzzled me was the absolutely irrelevant information about "scooters" and "sliders" that followed. First half of the book was great....the rest killed time on the 5 hour flight back from Vegas. I wish I had read it going out!!!

Good teaching and "bet strategy" tool for a tempting game

This book is a good learning tool for both betting technique AND proper betting amounts for the exciting game of craps. The "Power Betting Strategy" is great! If you follow it, your losses will always be small, and your wins can be potentially quite lucrative. The only problem with the book is all of its incredibly irrelevant "information" AFTER all of the solid teaching, descriptions and betting strategy. That's why I give it a "7" and not something higher.

I recomend this book for those people who would like to understand the Arab-Israeli conflict. The analisys is very racional and doesn't tends to any of the sides. Is very easy to get the ideas; the explanation, based in maps, is very clear and objective. The only misteak about it is the updating. The book's review reaches until 1993. Is known that the peace process is always moving towards an end. The inclusion of some information, like Oslo Agreement and the murder of Isaac Rabin would enrich the book.

The Arab-Israeli conflict is a fiercely debated topic with numerous accusations constantly being thrown back and forth. For someone just beginning to study the Arab-Israeli conflict, it can be overwhelming. This book is a collection of maps drafted by a professional cartographer to show the real dimensions of treaties, ceasefires, boycotts, and other historical moments in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

I have reviewed the 1984 Fourth Edition, but several editions have since come out with updated information and additional maps to reflect more recent developments. I recommend getting the most recent edition available.
