When I was in college, I had an assignment to deliver an informational speech. Being a UFO geek from childhood, I decided I wanted to explain the differences between close encounters of the first, second, and third kinds. Unfortunately, the only reference materials I could find were a couple of paperback books and a copy of the Weekly World News. If only I’d had a book like Nigel Watson’s UFO Investigations Manual (Haynes Publishing, 2014) handy.
UFO Investigations Manual is a comprehensive guide to unidentified flying objects from 1892 to today. It takes the subject seriously and factually, not judging but only presenting the facts as they were reported. There are chapters describing the most notable reported sightings of UFOs, UFO classifications, evidence of landings, collections of stories from supposed abductees, and, (the thing that would have helped my speech) explanations of all seven (!) types of close encounters. Plus, if the reader feels this book isn’t yet complete, there are appendices that explain how to produce a UFO investigation report, as well as the tools and materials needed for UFO watching.
UFO Investigations Manual is really a must have for anyone with an interest in space and the supernatural. It is an entertaining and educational read that doesn’t try to mock believers or argue against skeptics. It gives an all-encompassing overview of the fascinating realm of aliens. NOT WHAT YOU THINK

I didnt expect all that nonsense about ley lines, stonhenge, and fairy circles in this book. I was also expecting more high quality photographs, even if they were repeats from other books. There is little of that here...but lost of photos of things often taken to be ufos, like comets and clouds and the like. Not needed. Also counter-productive was the iphone fakes photographs. Having been a believer most of my life and reader of Keel and Ruppelt, I came away from this book fairly pushed toward the NON-believer end of the spectrum. This has got some interesting stuff in it, but keep your expectations low.

It is actually a good starting point for interested parties

Actually a very reasonable collection of sightings, research,explanations, and even debunking's. It is actually a good starting point for interested parties. Most of the articles as I preliminary skimmed the subjects, were reported fairly in comparison to what I have gathered from other sources. One thing I noticed is the author is not jumping at the alien conclusion to the facts reported, but leaves this to the reader to decide. Reading it all and forming conclusions is the right way. The author puts in some of the debunking theories, some of which I don't necessarily agree with. But again, this is a condensed volume of subject that takes up several library shelves for proper coverage. Glad I bought the book, even though I had almost expected to see the total dissasembly and explanation of repair of a UFO, as all of the other Haynes auto manuals do.
