If you finish all the exercises, you will be extremely competent in German.

Every possible pitfall for German learners is covered in this book, and you are given plenty of practice. Living in Germany, I was able to expand my vocabulary and fluency rather well, but I didn't trust myself to write competently, and I felt that I had hit a ceiling with just "learning by doing." I ordered Durrell's grammar book, which is the absolute best grammar book for intermediate to advanced learners, but I felt overwhelmed with all the information without any way to really practice what I had just read. Practicing German Grammar is pounding all that great knowledge into my head. A MUST-BUY for upper-intermediate and advanced learners.

About the Author
James A. Michener was one of the world’s most popular writers, the author of more than forty books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Pulitzer Prize–winning Tales of the South Pacific, the bestselling novels The Source, Hawaii, Alaska, Chesapeake, Centennial, Texas, Caribbean, and Caravans, and the memoir The World Is My Home. Michener served on the advisory council to NASA and the International Broadcast Board, which oversees the Voice of America. Among dozens of awards and honors, he received America’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 1977, and an award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 1983 for his commitment to art in America. Michener died in 1997 at the age of ninety.

Make Sure You Purchase an Unabridged Edition

It is my understanding, James Michener served in the South Pacific and then authored this work. In format, it is a series of related short stories that reminds me, in format, of "Winesburg Ohio" by Sherwood Anderson, and "Dubliners" by James Joyce. Like other fictional works authored by former American Servicemen about World War II, this work is often dark and complicated. Of course, so is war. Issues such as racism and rape are mentioned and discussed. The work served as a foundation of characters for the musical "South Pacific", but it is NOT the same story. The writing is entertaining and the work is an easy read. As far as I am concerned it is the kind of work that an individual can read and complete while on vacation while at the beach, etc...

I have discovered that there are some printings that are abridged. I purchased one and then purchased an unabridged printing and am glad I did so.

Great book!

If you can overlook the fact that there's a war going on, this is a great book. There's just enough south sea's adventure to freshen your imagination. I love the characters and the descriptions of the islands. Because it's a series of "short stories" I find that I can pick it up and read parts of it when I have a few minutes of down time and come away with something to think about. I suppose it has a lot to do with the fact that I first read it as young woman and it brings back the way I felt then.

TALES OF THE SOUTH PACFIC by James Michener is a rare book which communicates what it felt like to be involved in WWII.
The budding genius author Michener had the privileged viewpoint of being "embedded" with the Navy during the war. He
then lightly fictionalizes, organizes, and distills his experiences into 19 highly varied short stories which communicate
something about what it felt like, and what it meant.

I am fascinated by WWII and, have read probably a hundred books by historians, memoirs by soldiers and sailors, and so
forth. Those are wonderful books but, they are nonfiction and fairly dry. They tell you a lot about what happened and
why, but not much about how it felt.

For example, take WAR IN THE BOATS by William Ruhe. This is a WWII Pacific submarine memoir and an exact contemporary of
TOTSP. The difference is, Ruhe is not a novelist. He tells you as best he can, what it was like but, one must be a
mature reader to project context, feelings, and meaning onto the (indisputably incredible) story he tells. That is to
say, Ruhe gives you the skeleton but it's quite dry to read.

As I get older I often prefer more facts and less embellishment but, that's because I am better able to fill in the
details myself, and also the embellishment is often poorly done and ends up reducing your trust in the author and
detracting from the story.

Michener is talented enough that, he embellishes terrifically and, is becoming one of my special authors:

I first read Michener's HAWAII during a trip to that isle. Intrigued, I dug into Michener's origins and discovered
TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC, published in 1947. It won the Pulitzer Prize and was adapted by Rogers & Hammerstein for
the musical SOUTH PACIFIC.

After this amazing beginning Michener went on to become one of the 20th century's most prolific authors, writing huge
historical epics (HAWAII was the first).

I found TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC to be more literary than HAWAII. Whereas Hawaii was a "historical epic genre novel",
his ambition in this book is more intimate and personal, and more true, like literature is true, with difficult to
express real human situations, and great breadth.

Michener, an orphan raised by a Quaker, made very good use of his fortune, to the point where in wikipedia I read:
"Michener became a major philanthropist, donating more than US$100 million to educational and writing institutions."

I haven't read his other epics yet although I think THE SOURCE may be next on my list.

About the Author
Baird T. Spalding, whose name became legend in metaphysical circles during the first half of the 20th century, played an important part in introducing to the Western world knowledge of the Masters, who are assisting and guiding the destiny of mankind. Born in England, at age four he went to India. At age seventeen he finished the University and went to California where he stayed two years. He then traveled to Heidelberg, Germany and studied for eight years and then returned to California for post-graduate work in Archaeology at Berkeley and Stanford.
After years of working with publisher Douglas DeVorss to write and promote the Life & Teaching series, Spalding died in 1953 in Arizona.

I read these volumes over 40 years ago . . .

I read these books over 40 years ago. I was very young and in a lot of turmoil. After reading these books, I carried what I read with me through all the hell I was living through, and a "breakthrough" would occasionally happen. I am now an old woman (67 years old), and ready to read them again, from an entirely different perspective. I have been "wrestling" with the messages of these volumes, but coming to understand the teachings more and more. The subject is so much greater than I could comprehend at the time, and is still so magnificent that I struggle to fully understand the message.

Made up story being sold as personal experiences...

This book is discussed as an actual account of someone's personal experiences. It was necessary for me to research and find that the facts argue that is a complete lie. I don't mind fantastic stories, but if you're going to make s*** up admit it instead of claiming that you had fantastic experiences. There are true magick and miracles in this world, but making crap up and claiming it's real muddies the waters of those of us trying to find them. >.

Excellent biography of Henry VIII's six wives

The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir is an excellent biography of the wives of King Henry VIII of England who reigned from 1507 until his death in 1547. Not only do we learn from comprehensive biographies of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, but we learn a great deal about King Henry himself. Alison Weir has delved deep into research using surviving letters, documents and writings from the era. The bibliography is extensive and interesting in itself.

Henry's deep desire for a male heir kept him in a constant state of worrying about an heir since at that time women were considered to be far inferior to men and not fit to rule. In the end, Henry VIII had two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, and one son who died as a child.. His daughter, Mary, would become the queen "Bloody Mary" and Elizabeth would become Queen Elizabeth I. Mary was the daughter of Henry and Catherine of Aragon and Elizabeth was by Henry and Anne Boleyn. Anne was an outgoing and outspoken queen, not something in tune with her times. Trumped up charges by Cromwell sent her to the Tower and to her death. In the time of the plague and the sweating sickness, it was fortunate that Mary and Elizabeth lived to adulthood, but Henry was to have a male heir, Edward VI by Jane Seymour to ascend to the throne at Henry XIII's death, only to die at age 15. Jane Seymour had died soon after giving birth.

Anne of Cleves was the fourth wife but Henry was deeply disappointed upon meeting her and went around saying, "I like her not! I like her not!" Anne was after her own independence from strict and oppressive royal parents, and the marriage between her and Henry XIII was annulled without being consummated. Catherine Howard was next and that marriage ended in her death, like Anne Boleyn's, because Henry found out about her promiscuity. The sixth wife was Catherine Parr, who proved to be a good wife and queen for Henry. Henry ended his string of marriages with her, and they stayed together until death separated them.

This book is intriguing and reads like a novel. It is extremely informative while being one of those books that is a page-turner even though it is non-fiction and fairly long. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it for readers who like history, especially from this time era.

Alison Weir is awesome

I never get tired of reading any of Ms. Weir's books. This one is just as great, with many details of his life that I didn't know about. Great read, great drama, lots of drama in fact when it comes to this dude. No wonder he is still fascinating hundreds of years later. What I find intriguing about that whole time period is that the more things change the more they stay the same. The same drive for power, money, influence, sex, religion and fame back then is alive and well today. I can only giggle at the thought of Henry on Twitter. "Anne is the best", "Anne betrayed me". "The Pope sucks", "I am the best there ever was", "I love a good wedding, don't you?"

You Won't Be Disappointed

I resisted buying this book for years, I was not sure whether or not I already have it. It turns out I did not. I loved this book. I appreciate Alison Weir's meticulous research and her writing. The book gave another dimension and new information for me regarding England's most famous or shall we say infamous monarch. A must read.
