About the Author
Blandine Calais-Germain's lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, eventually led to an interest in other physical disciplines, and then to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body.

From 1977 to 1980 the author studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris. In physiotherapy, body movements are analyzed both in terms of their neurophysiological and mechanical aspects, which allows for a better understanding of the actual mechanisms of movement.

From her work with dance and physiotherapy, the author developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement. This method, the subject of her companion volumes Anatomy of Movement and Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, has been enthusiastically received in workshops that she presented for many years in France. Her two books have been translated and published throughout the world in many languages.

Great for students, yogis, and teachers!

Fantastic book and required reading for any serious yoga practitioner or teacher. I'm sure most customers are probably in medical school that need this, but regardless of why you need this book, know that it is brand new, has sharp, detailed pictures and explanations, and is at the top of the list for anyone desiring to learn more about how the human body moves, what parts of the anatomy are utilized, and a broad overview of anatomy in general. For beginner and intermediate levels.

Excellent book for beginning and intermediate students

_Anatomy of Movement_ by Blandine Calais-Germain is an excellent book for someone who is new to kenesiology, and also for the beginning and intermediate athlete.

As its title suggests, _Anatomy of Movement_ focuses on the bones, muscles, ligaments & tendons we use when we move. Each major section of the body, such back, arms, legs, etc., gets its own section in the book.

The anatomical drawings are very well done. The book has enough text to explain the drawings, but not so much as to overwhelm the reader. There are drawings showing the directions each muscle pulls in during different types of movements. Those drawings are VERY helpful to understanding the kinesiology of the body.

There was also an extensive section in the beginning on anatomical terms, such as dorsal, dorsiflexion, lateral, anterior, posterior, etc. The sections on the spine, pelvis, & knees were exceptionally well done.

I am not a bodyworker, masseuse, or dancer; but as an engineer who sits in an office chair all day and does martial arts and occasionally yoga to relax, I have developed a keen interest in kenesiology and anatomical studies. _Anatomy of Movement_ didn't specifically tell me the mechanics of any single karate kata** or yoga asana, and it didn't specifically explain why bad posture in a chair leads to a sore back when I walk around -- but it did give me a sound base of knowledge when I started reading other books about specific movements and activities.

** - _Anatomy of Movement_ did help me understand how joint locks on the shoulder work.

Excellent Anatomy Guide for Athletes

The Anatomy of Movement is a well-written and organized book that is targeted to athletes, dancers and others who need to understand physical structures and their functional relationships to movement.

The book has very clear and detailed line drawings that are easy to understand and convert to three dimensional visualizations. They are also presented logically and without a lot of jargon or superfluous detail.

The book is organized by regions of the body and it does a good job of covering all areas. There is also a nice balance between diagrams and text.

I was a biology major as an undergraduate and a teaching fellow in Physiology. I also took comprehensive anatomy at the doctoral level and I found this to be just enough detail for people who are athletes. There are more comprehensive books out there, but if you want to learn the essentials painlessly, this is your book.

Another good book with a different focus is the Anatomy of Yoga by McCall. This includes yoga specific information and more text relating to movement. I regard the book I'm reviewing and the Anatomy of Yoga as complimentary.

WHY IS THIS TREASURE OF A BOOK OUT OF PRINT???

Hemer's book on Acts is simply the best on the market. For sheer in-depth scholarship, is it is without parallel.

First off, let me elucidate his conclusions. He argues for "a dating of Acts in 62" (p 408) after an exhaustive investigation into the evidence. Also, he contends that Luke was the author of both Acts and Luke.

He insists that various "inconsequential details are hard to explain except as vivid experiences recalled at no great distance " (p 389). In addition, to argue for a later date is to have to explain why there is no mention of the fall of Jerusalem, not even a hint of war, or of the death of James.

There is not even the slightest suggestion in either Luke and Acts of "the more immediate deterioration of Christian relations with Rome involved in the Neronian persecution" (p 377), all of which is inexplicable except with the early date.

Furthermore, "The prominence and authority of the Sadducees in Acts belongs to the pre-70 situation, before the collapse of their political cooperation with Rome" (p 378).

Luke shows all the characteristics of a true scholar and a reliable historian. And, of course, he writes in the most elegant Greek of the New Testament. Time and again, Hemer finds proof Luke appears to have questioned "surviving eyewitnesses" (p 355) including the mother of Jesus. Hemer also finds evidence that he has re-interviewed eyewitnesses and as a result "sometimes edited older traditions (p 351).

He also argues that "Galatians...as the earliest epistle, c late 48" (p 270) against the most usual candidate, 1 Thess. And he provides brilliant arguments for this conclusion.

Regarding the all important 'we-passages' Hemer is clear as to their importance and meaning. Indeed, all the arguments against the we-passages being just what they seem are strained and unlikely.

Chapter 4 and 5 give what has got to be the most EXHAUSTIVE list of historical and other knowledge displayed in Acts that I have ever seen. It actually runs from page 101-220. This alone makes the book valuable.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE REISSUE THIS BOOK!!! For one thing, I want a copy I don't have to pay $140 for.

Who Knew History Could Be So Much Fun

I loved this book. While you could read it in snippets - search out on one or two elections that were high on the sleaze-o-meter (the author gives nearly every election a rating for its dirty tricks quotient) I found it both enlighting and enjoyable to read it all the way through. Cummins has a clever, relaxed style and a real eye for quirky details. He also has no political agenda which means every party has to face up to their dirty past -Democrats, Republicans, and Democratic Republicans. After delving into several decades worth of elections I began to feel a bit better about our era, if only because dirty tricks and cheating seems to go in cycles. The public can be snowed for awhile but they always come to their senses, and there's something reassuring about learning that. And while 2000 was awful, between the hanging chads and the Supremes deciding the election, at least not too many dead people voted, as in previous elections, and we no longer have drunks being paid in whisky to vote a few dozen times.
Every page has another colorful tidbit. For example, my old TV hero Davy Crocket was actually a Whig attack dog, accusing Martin Van Buren of dressing in corsetts. And I loved finding out about the men who ran for President and lost, and what happened to them afterwards (poor Horace Greeley died within months of losing.)
Also, there were some colorful Vice Presidential candidates over the years. And I had my eyes opened about several of our chief executives. Talk about anything for a vote...Finally there were many relevant comparisons you could make to the present election season. For example, Taft made no apologies for his religion. "If the American public is so narrow as not to elect a Unitarian, well and good, I can stand it." I wish Mitt Romney were so direct. Al Smith's struggles also offer a perspective on this topic.
This book was a delight - my wife thought so as well, and I've just handed it off to my 16 year old who I'm sure is going to love it as well. Be sure to check out Andrew Jackson, Rutherford Hayes, and Herbert Hoover and LBJ. Unbelievable!!

Entertaining but....

The book is entertaining and has a lot of great facts, but it misses the mark on a few too many simple facts. For example, it says that Calvin Coolidge became the President by winning the 1924 election; ignoring that he became President when Harding died. It also identifies Robert Kennedy as a Senator from Massachusetts, when in reality he represented New York.

Fantastic and fun read, very well researched

Simply the best, most fun book on presidential politics I've ever read. I'm hoping Cummins does more in this vein at some point. Thoroughly entertaining and even my 10 year old has enjoyed it a great deal. Can't recommend highly enough.

This book deals with all aspects of advanced composite materials; what they are, where they are used, how they are made, their properties, how they are designed and analyzed, and how they perform in-service. It covers both continuous and discontinuous fiber composites fabricated from polymer, metal, and ceramic matrices, with an emphasis on continuous fiber polymer matrix composites.

The book starts with an overview of composite materials and how highly anistropic composites differ from isotropic materials, such as metals. Some of the important advantages and disadvantages of composites are then discussed. The first chapter wraps up with some of the applications for advanced composites. Next, the reinforcements and their product forms are covered with an emphasis on glass, aramid, and carbon fibers. This is followed by a chapter on polymer matrix resin systems, covering the main thermosetting and thermoplastic resin systems, including polyesters, vinyl esters, epoxies, bismaleimides, cynate esters, polyimides, and phenolics. The principles of resin toughening are also presented, along with an introduction to the physiochemical tests that are used to characterize resin and cured laminates.

The next part of the book covers polymer composite fabrication processes, with chapters on cure tooling, thermoset composite fabrication processes, and thermoplastic composites fabrication processes. Important thermoset lay-up methods include wet lay-up, prepreg lay-up, automated tape laying, fiber placement, filament winding, and pultrusion. Vacuum bagging in preparation for cure is also discussed along with the cure processes for both addition and condensation curing thermosets. Thermoset liquid molding covers preforming technology (weaving, knitting, stitching, and braiding) followed by the major liquid molding processes, namely resin transfer molding (RTM), resin film infusion (RFI), and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM).

In a chapter on thermoplastic composite fabrication processes, thermoplastic composite consolidation is covered along with the different methods of thermoforming thermoplastics. Finally, the joining processes that are unique to thermoplastic composites are discussed. After these processing fundamentals are set, there is a chapter that deals with some of the detailed processing issues unique to thermoset and thermoplastic composites. The concept of cure modeling is introduced along with the importance of both lay-up and cure variables, hydrostatic resin pressure, chemical composition, resin and prepreg, debulking, and caul plates. Residual cure stresses and exothermic reactions are also covered followed by methods for in-process cure monitoring.

Adhesive bonding, sandwich, and integrally cocured structures are introduced in two chapters. The basics of adhesive bonding are covered along with its advantages and disadvantages. The importance of joint design, surface preparation, and bonding procedures are discussed along with honeycomb bonded assemblies, foam bonded assemblies, and integrally cocured assemblies.

There is a chapter on the types, properties, and fabrication technology for discontinuous fiber polymer matrix composites, with an emphasis on spray-up, compression molding, structural reaction injection molding, and injection molding.

In a chapter on assembly, the emphasis is on mechanical joining including the hole preparation procedures and fasteners used for structural assembly. Sealing and painting are also briefly discussed.

The next four chapters cover the test methods and properties for composite materials. Nondestructive test methods include visual, ultrasonics, radiographic, and thermographic inspection methods.
