Great Book! Beautiful deck of cards that come with this title!

I had been conversing back and forth with the seller (Bges Books) asking her specific questions about this book set. She was extremely helpful and within a day, I knew she was very trust worthy and compedent about the product she was selling. In particular, this book, by Jane Lyle "The Fotune Teller's Deck." The seller gave me all the information she had on the title and the condition of the book, the cards - which were both in "Like New Condition" and they were. The box was a little bit worn around the edges and had a scar from where someone had removed a previous sticker that was placed on the box. But other than that, even the box was in a decent condition, even with the signs of normal wear.

The seller was kind enough to send me a picture of some of the cards and no one could imagine my glee when I saw that they were the original deck of cards that go with this book. So I completed my puchased even before I saw the picture of the cards. Because, by this time, I had complete trust and a great rapore with Ages Books owner, Brenda.

I received the book set before they were expected and they were exactly as Brenda had described them. I was so pleased to have finally found this treasure of a gem, in this book and the original deck cards in such pristine condition and with the original box, and the price was so affordable. Not like other sellers that are just selling the book and no cards at so much higher prices.

Anyway, the book is an excellent reference for reading a plain deck of cards and getting one's questions answered about their life, or situation, etc. (Please note: This deck is not just plain. It is a beautiful deck of cards with the original artist's rending of the court cards and the jokers. The cards look like they are painted on wood with such beauty and detail in the court and joker cards. The rest of the deck looks antique. But this was done on purpose to give this original deck of 54 cards this olden day antique look about them.)

So since this book set is out of publication now. The complete book set is a rare gem to find in today's market place. Except at a very high price or just the book without its companion deck of cards. But the book, itself, is worth buying if anyone has an interest is learning the art of divination. The book gives detailed descriptions of each card and each suit in an originized manner and of course the court cards and use of the jokers. There are 10 different card spreads/layouts given in this book and even a Madame Lenormands Nine spread. Each spread comes with interpretations of the spreads. Some other spreads explained are: The Mystic Cross, the Magic Square, the Romany spread, the Alternative Romany spread, the Bohemian spread, the Star of Fifteen, the Cosmic Calendar, the Circle of Destiny, the Card of the Week, etc.

All-in-all, this is a wonderful book set and a rare fine at the price asked for it. I could not be happier with my purchase and will treasure it for years to come. I would buy from this seller again, and again if she has more gem's such as this one.

Amazing Find: Great "Playing Card" Tarot Deck, and Book!

I am very impressed with this deck of "Playing Cards" --which can be used as "Tarot" cards and the descriptive book, which explains their meanings. The standard playing card decks used today derived from "The Tarot," so this deck is charged with centuries of "fortune telling" experience and history.
The deck is quite beautiful--with an Antique effect and an obvious "reversal" clarification mark (outline symbol) on each card--with the reversal meaning of each card listed in the book, also. The back of the cards are very pretty, as well.
The lovely, well-written book provided with the deck is loaded with information about each card, with great descriptions of each card, full-color illustrations of the cards, instructions for various layouts of the cards and instructions for interpreting the cards.... this is not a typical, tiny little booklet, which usually comes with a deck of Cards--it is a full-sized book (160 pages) and is packed with information!
Coincidently, I had just discovered another book which can be used, easily, with this deck, although the book provided with this deck has a lot more information.... however, if you want to start with a very simple, easy to remember format, you can purchase this set and begin with the simple correspondences listed in ISBN # 0312265093 ("Doktor Snake's Voodoo Spellbook: Spells, Curses and Folk Magic for All Your Needs" by Doktor Snake), then work your way up to the full descriptions / correspondences depicted in "The Fortune Teller's Deck: Predict your future with playing cards," by Jane Lyle.
I am very excited about this Book & Card Deck set, because I was looking for a "standard playing deck" to use with Doktor Snake's book, mentioned above....and I happened-across this great Book/Card Deck set--which is much more impressive than most standard decks, artistically / aesthetically.
I have been using Tarot cards since 1990 and I have added this book/deck set to my "Favorites."

Another hot and flirty hit from author Robin Kaye!

Anyone who is a fan of Robin Kaye will be happy to know she's back in Boise, Idaho with this novella and yes most of the Kincaid clan is around but even if you've never read a book by her, you will absolutely enjoy this holiday season story of second chance love! Star crossed teenage lovers Claire Coleman and Jack Bennett were torn apart by family duty seven years ago, but Jack's back and they soon realize that the years haven't changed their chemistry or feelings for one another. In town to settle his father's estate all Jack wants is to get back to his career in Germany, but life and love have other plans for him.

I flat out love, loved this story because from the minute Jack walked into the local bar, Humpin' Hannah's and was spotted by Claire it was obvious that despite the years there was still something there for both of them. Yes at first it was lust, but it became quite clear soon after it was way more than that. Make up lovin' is suppose to be the best but I'm telling you after reading this book I'm going to say make up lovin' has nothing on reunion lovin' ...WHEW!

While Jack and Claire are coming to terms with each other as adults and what that means for their future, they get a lot of advice and support from their friends including many of the Kincaid family and their significant others. This family always manages to make me smile and laugh and there were many of those moments during this book especially from Karma. Man, I love that woman!

This book is a delightful holiday treat and is part of the Killer Fiction Writers 12 Days of Christmas book collection. A hero not afraid to change his life, a heroine who lets bygones be bygones, secondary characters you can't help but love, and smart dialog make The Goose, The Gander, and the Three French Hens a holiday must read!

I loved this installment of Robin Kaye's Boise boys!

If you know about the Kincaid men and Karma, Karma is back at it, using her God given gift of interfering in the lives of those she loves. It doesn't stop at family. Why waste her talent if she can't use it on everyone.

Mary Claire and Jack Bennett are way out matched when it comes to Karma and Robin Kaye!

When I heard that Robin Kaye was going to be part of the 12 Days of Christmas, I was so excited. I was dancing in my chair. A Robin Kaye Christmas story, just how good can it get! So as you can tell I was very excited to read The Goose, The Gander, And Three French Hens and I was not by any means disappointed.

Jack Bennett and Mary Claire Coleman had a secret relationship when they were young. For reasons some what beyond their control they were unable to be together. When Jack comes back to town to take care of his father's estate the sparks are still very much there with Mary Claire.

Jack and Mary Claire are sure their hot, steamy fling is just that, why should they not enjoy each other while Jack is in town. They both have such deep feelings for each other though. There is a lot of things from the past that must be taken care of before they can find their way together.

I enjoyed watching Jack & Mary Claire get to know each other again. I also enjoyed Mary Claire's relationship with her fellow owners of the 3 French Hens. I loved all the ladies of the 3 French Hens and they added a lot of fun to the story line.

I was so completely captivated by this story that I read it in one setting. I could not bring myself to set it down to do anything else. Of course I have not yet meet a Robin Kaye book that I did not love, this one is certainly no exception. I am always excited and looking forward to what she has in store for us lucky readers next. Her characters are always charming, funny, and just so compelling that I can not helping loving them.

I have not had the opportunity to read the rest of the books in this series but if they are half as good as Ms. Kaye's then I know I need to read them as well.

Most Jews read the siddur, a Hebrew word meaning "order," implying the order of prayers, with little or no comprehension of what they are reading. They are no different than Christians and Muslim. All fail to fulfill the purpose of prayer. The Hebrew word for prayer is tefillah, which is based on a root that means "to judge oneself." Prayer in Judaism is more than a petition, the basic meaning of the Latin and Greek word upon which "prayer" is based. It is a time of reflection, of inner judgment, of considering change and improvement.

* Highly significant is the English translation and commentary of Sir Jonathan Sacks, the chief rabbi of the British Empire. Rabbi Sacks introduces the siddur with an instructive thirty-two page Understanding Jewish Prayer. Rabbi Sacks' English is impeccable, unlike the yeshiva-type English contained in the currently popular siddur.

* Unlike this currently popular siddur that openly promotes a mystical ideology and a world-view where God is present in everyday affairs and manipulates individuals, groups and nations like puppets to do His will, Sacks' translation and commentary is open-minded and reasonable. For example, while discussing Israel's Independence Day, he mentions the mystic Nachmanides' view (in his commentary to Leviticus 18:25) that Jews only fully fulfils the divine commands (mitzvot) when they perform them in Israel. Sacks writes, among other things: "Interpreted non-mystically, this means that the Torah represents the architecture of a society, it is not just a code for the salvation of the soul. The Torah includes laws relating to welfare, the environment, the administration of justice, employer-employee relations, and many other matters not normally thought of as religious. It is less about the ascent to heaven, than about bringing heaven down to earth in the form of a just, gracious and compassionate social order." This world-view stands in stark contrast to that advocated in the currently popular siddur.

* The new siddur contains a Guide to the Reader section that is an excellent introduction to how Hebrew should be pronounced and explains how the editors of the siddur made pronunciation easy by inserting clues in the Hebrew text. An example is that the emphasis on all Hebrew words should be on the last symbol except where the editors placed a small line next to the vowel in words that are not so pronounced.

* There is a section explaining how the services differ in Israel.

* There are 66 pages of 490 instructions on the laws of prayers.

* The editors of the new siddur recognize, as they should, that there have been centuries of debate as to the wording of some prayers. Two pages delineate these differences.

* Many people do not know when and how to respond to certain prayers - for example, should one say "amen." This is addressed.

* There are charts indicating what prayers could be said for special occasions, such as the birth of a child, for an illness and for guidance.

* Many synagogue attendees cannot read Hebrew and do not know how to navigate through a siddur, so the editors placed an English transliteration of the two types of mourners' kaddish as the last pages of the siddur.

* It is refreshing and characteristic of the Koren Siddur to read on page 26 that Jews "believe that every human being is equally formed in the image of God," men and women, Jew and non-Jew.
These are just some of the many innovations introduced in the Koren Siddur. Synagogues should replace their current prayer books and give their parishioners this magnificent volume.

The Koren-Sacks Siddur

This word alone is enough to conjure up praise, disgust or tepid acceptance among my Orthodox readers. The publisher, which has been printing Jewish material since 1977, is edited by Rabbis Meir Zlotowitz and Nosson Scherman who spawned a revolution within the realm of Jewish publishing.

The enormously popular ArtScroll Siddur, available in a variety of translations and styles, can be found in any American Orthodox synagogue today. And the company's vast collection of translated gemaras, TaNaChs and hashkafa-centered books have made Jewish learning accessible to an unprecedented number of observant and non-observant Jews.

In my view, the Jewish world should be grateful for the establishment of ArtScroll. Before the company's vast library of prayer books and scriptural texts, there were few options in Jewish study available to those who were not fluent in Hebrew. Now, people actually have an idea of what they're saying and studying at shul/home/school/yeshiva, and this is a beautiful thing.

But there are some things about ArtScroll I do not care for. Their translations are sometimes vague and often non-literal (Shir HaShirim is one of the more notorious examples I can think of regarding this phenomenon), they are less open to non-Charedi ideas and their "novels" frankly suck.

This is where alternative publishing houses, such as Metsudah and Koren, come in.

Koren is a Jerusalem-based publisher who, like ArtScroll, has its own unique typeface and style. According to [...], Eliyahu Koren in 1961 "set out to publish the first Tanakh (Bible) edited, designed, printed and bound by Jews in nearly 500 years." Most people who own a Koren Tanach will notice that its "font" is old-yet-modern looking, and its cream-colored paper is thin to keep the sefer from becoming too heavy.

In 2009, Koren teamed up with Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom/British Commonwealth. Sacks is known worldwide for a Zionistic/Modern-Orthodox, scholarly approach to Judaism, and even those who don't agree with everything he says regard him as a "chashuv" man.

The result of the Koren-Sacks collaboration is a siddur which I honestly find quite delightful. Here are some things I'd like to say about it...

The first thing I noticed about this siddur is that it is very "Koren-esque". The thin, cream-colored Koren paper is used, and the famous Koren typeface appears here. At the same time, it will be immediately noticed by all who use this siddur that unlike ArtScroll, the Koren-Sacks siddur places the Hebrew text on the odd-numbered pages and their English translation on the even-numbered pages. This takes some getting used to, but I believe it makes tefila flow more smoothly.

I really liked this book and I'm not a young adult!

I'm actually 59. I did recently retire from teaching high school, so the beginning drew me in with the typical high school drama. But this book soon became so much more than just high school drama. I laughed, I cried, I sat on the edge of my chair. I didn't put it down until it was finished. I was surprised at the amount of intrigue in this book, especially since the author is described as a writer of Christian Fiction. The Christian part was present, but you weren't overwhelmed by it. A few personal prayers to help Bella get through some sticky spots, but it wasn't the main focus. I would recommend this to any female regardless of age or religion. It wasn't the bubblegum sweet I thought it might have been. I'm So Sure, the next book by Jenny B. Jones,is supposed to be out November 2009. I look forward to reading about Bella once again.

Edit: I just heard from a 14 year old who read the book. I sent her a copy. She LOVED it and is mad at me because the next book about Bella is 5 months away. My solution was to send her another set of 3 books by Jenny B. Jones.

Fun, easy read.

I don't read many teen books, but this one was a lot of fun.

Bella Kirkwood is a mini little New York socialite. Daddy is a rich, famous plastic surgeon and Bella is spoiled beyond belief. When her father has a mid-life crisis and decides to trade her mother in for new and different models, Bella has her own crisis. To make matters worse, her mother meets a man on theInternet and travels to Oklahoma to marry him. Bella not only gains a stepfather who works in a feminine products factory and lives on a farm, but his two bratty sons, and a down-home country lifestyle with no credit cards and no more Marc Jacobs purses.

Her first attempts at making new friends backfire, but she soon finds her place and a job with the school newspaper. She learns to trust a little more in God and along the way has some very funny adventures.

Jenny B. Jones has crafted a really delightful story. While the characters are a bit stereotyped, they are certainly likeable. The issues of divorce and remarriage and how they affect children are real and believable. Bella is fun, and parts of the story were laugh out loud funny.

An easy, light read, easily recommended for teenage girls. I look forward to the sequel.

An Adorable Book

So Not Happening is about a girl who faces culture shock when she goes from living as a pampered New York princess to living in a small town in Oklahoma.

Bella is a sweet girl and suffers through the big changes she has to face in a typical teen way. She learns from her actions and faces a mystery in her challenge to fit in.

This is a Christian novel but the Christianity isn't rubbed in your face or a large part of the plot, she prays a bit and goes to a FCA meeting but nothing that would put off a Non-Christian reader. There is no drinking by the main characters (and the characters do a good job of just saying no when they're at parties where alcohol is involved) and no sex at all in the book (just a little bit of kissing).

This book reads like a book that's geared towards older teens but would be appropriate for anyone who is interested.

Abdelmonam Kouka

Abdelmonam Kouka is a Tunisian computer engineer. He received his engineering diploma in computer science in 2007 from National School of Computer Sciences (ENSI), one of the best engineering schools in Tunisia. He received a master's degree in information security from the same school (ENSI) in 2009 and a master's degree in free and open source software from ISI/UVT in 2011. He received a master's degree in innovation management (the DICAMP.eu project) in 2014. He was not just a student. In fact, after getting his engineering degree in 2007, in parallel to his master's marathon, he started working as a software developer in HR Access and then as a Zimbra consultant in another company. After that, he started to develop with Alcatel-Lucent as a Java/JEE developer to finish with Alcatel-Lucent as an IP/MPLS Expert. He left Alcatel-Lucent in December 2012 to launch, in partnership with his friend Ayed Akrout, his own startup named TAC-TIC (for more information, visit http://www.tac-tic.net/) that provides ICT services such as software development, open source consulting, and IP/MPLS engineering and support. He is also an Alcatel-Lucent University trainer who delivers advanced courses on IP platforms, fixed networks, and broadband access technologies. Not a ton of depth in the explanations but that is in line with the intent "essentials". The book does a really good job of covering a broad range of topics for Ubuntu in a short space. The examples all work well and the instructions are very clear. I gave the book four stars instead of five because the book could really benefit from another round of editing. There are a lot of awkward word choices scattered throughout which require you to re-read the sentence to make sure you understand what the author is saying. But in the whole, while this detracts a bit from the readability, the overall treatment and content are really solid. If you're looking for a quick read on getting up to speed on implementing Ubuntu Servers then this book is for you.

Great book on a Biblical Theology of the NT

When I received "The Witness of Jesus, Paul and John: An Exploration in Biblical Theology" by Larry Helyer, I noticed the book looked like a college or seminary text book. After reading it, I feel like I have earned some college credits!

The book is eminently suited for a text book, because it is really a course on a Biblical Theology of the New Testament. Helyer opens the book with a question that looms large in New Testament studies today: Is the New Testament unified in its message? It is common for liberal or modern NT scholars to claim Paul's theology is opposed to Christ's, and John's concerns were opposed to Matthew's. In response to this problem, Larry Helyer sets out to trace the theology of Jesus, Paul and John as found in the New Testament. Then he compares each of their emphases and puts the question to rest, in my opinion. There are different emphases but the basic message of these three primary movers in the NT remains largely the same.

Along the way, Helyer explains exactly what Biblical Theology (BT) is, and he describes the problem of the overall unity of the Bible by tracing a history of theology from the time of the Apostles to today. He then moves on to discuss the two basic evangelical systems of BT, Covenant Theology (CT) and Dispensationalism. His chapter defining BT helpfully discusses how the canon shapes our BT, and provides a helpful method for doing BT. His historical sketch of how the Christian church has dealt with the unity of the Bible opened my eyes to some of the big players in Biblical scholarship of the last couple hundred years. He explained the influence of Bultman, Von Rad, Robinson and others, with particular stress on the development of BT. In his discussion of CT and dispensationalism, I was helped by his comparison of the growth and development within CT with the rise of progressive dispensationalism. He doesn't come and spell out his overall conviction in the matter, but takes care to follow the clear theological teaching of Scripture. From what I can tell he ends up more in line with the progressive dispensational or revised CT perspective.

The bulk of the book is his examination of the theology of Jesus (as seen in the Synoptic Gospels), Paul and John. This examination is strengthened by Helyer's familiarity with 2nd temple Judaism and the similarities and differences such Jewish thought has with the New Testament. Helyer also explains the theological development of various key terms as he goes along. He is abreast of the points of controversy, and he navigates them with care.

In his section on the Gospels, I found his discussion of the Kingdom extremely helpful, especially with regard to working out how the Testaments are unified. He compares the different phrases "kingdom of God", "kingdom of Heaven", etc. and convincingly demonstrates they are synonymous. The kingdom is explained in terms of inaugurated eschatology, and Jesus' use of the kingdom is shown as both similar and different from the Judaism of his day.

Helyer's discussion of Paul begins by explaining that we only have insights into Pauline theology extracted from his overall thought. Paul's letters are occasional documents, addressed to a specific church in a specific situation. After discussing the question of a center of Pauline theology, he handles the matter of justification and the new Pauline perspective quite well. He is careful to appreciate the new insights into Pauline thought, yet with his familiarity with 2nd temple Judaism he explains why he thinks the NPP goes to far in overturning Reformation thought. His discussion of Paul's view of the Law was masterful, even though he took just a couple short pages to survey Paul's view of the relationship of the believer and the law of Moses. He explains that while Jews are "under the law", the Christian is "not under law". The law has run its course in redemptive history. The Spirit, now, is the "moral governor of the Christian life". "For Paul, the new covenant operates under a new law, the law of Christ, the law of love, which, while embodying underlying moral principles of the old Mosaic legislation, should not be strictly identified with it." (pg. 266-268).

In detailing John's portrayal of Christ's person and work, Helyer takes pains to explain John is countering a proto-Gnostic error. There is a polemical thrust behind John's presentation of Christ. On the question of John's use of the term "Logos", Helyer explains that the term has as much of an OT and 2nd temple Judaistic background as it has roots in Greek thought. In examining John's writings, the emphasis on eschatology goes up a notch, of course. Yet an already, but not yet view of the kingdom is still inherent in John's thought. Helyer's treatment of Revelation was excellent. I especially liked his chiastic outline of the book (from pg. 353):

3. Seven Bowls
C'. Vision of Babylon the Great (chs. 17-18): Who will lose charge?
B'. Vision of the King and His Kingdom: The Church Triumphant (chs. 19-21):
What is the future prospect and fulfillment for the church?
A'. The Final Vision: The Returning and Rewarding Christ (ch. 22)

His discussion of Rev. 20, also almost pushed me back into historic premillennialism. His exegetical treatment was clear and forceful. It forces me to go back and study that passage again in more depth.

At the end of the book, Helyer ties up the various strands of theology that Jesus (the Synoptics), John and Paul have been developing. Within the overarching and unifying theme of the Kingdom, Helyer finds a great degree of unity in this NT witness. Helyer is right to conclude by the end of his book that "enough... has been said to counteract the lopsided insistence that diversity and contradiction drown out any meaningful sense of unity and harmony."

After sitting through Helyer's "class", I have a greater understanding of NT theology, and biblical theology in general. If you pick up the book, you will be glad you entered his course as well.

Scholarly yet approachable

Professor Helyer has done a remarkable work here. Written for the seminary classroom, "The Witness of Jesus, Paul and John - an Exploration in Biblical Theology" sets and keeps a pace and uses language which even an interested layman can understand and follow. The subject considers several Christian mainline evangelical positions and perspectives with balance and grace; diverse philosophical currents, historical and current, are laid out for their uniqueness - and those holding onto each are then called by Helyer into dynamic action to seize what is common among them, and work at having a sum be greater than their parts.
