Great for Piano Beginners!

The John W. Schaum Piano series is an excellent way to introduce children to the piano. Geared to the early grade school level, A-The Red Book is a follow-up to Pre-A-The Green Book. All the piano books in this series feature colorful illustrations, easy-to-read notes, and simple hand positions. The book progresses from very simple melodies at the start to more complex "melody and chord" songs at the end. Children love to sing along as they play the notes. I have found this to be a great way to for younger kids to learn to read music and begin their study of the piano.

Excellent for kids and adults

I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent. Easy to read and understand. Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace. I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series. Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

A great series of learn-to-play books

I was very happy to be able to find the John W. Schaum Piano Course books. Many years ago, I was taught to play piano using these books and now I'm able to teach my children the same way. This book provides a very simply step-by-step approach to piano playing that is challenging but still easy enough for children to understand and to practice what they've learned on their own.

About the Author
Eileen Power(1889 1940) was a writer and a feminist known for being the second woman appointed to a Chair in economic history at the London School of Economics. After marrying the historian Michael Postan in 1937, she became professor of economic history at Cambridge University.

A view of History from the Medieval Kitchens

Eileen Power's Medieval People sets out to study the Middle Ages not from the viewpoint of an Historical abstraction, but rather from that of the people who lived during the age. It is an account of six individuals who lived during the MA's; Bodo, a Frankish Peasant; Marco Polo, the famous Venetian merchant; Madame Eglentyne, prioress of Chaucer; an anonymous middle-class Parisian housewife; and two English merchants, one engaged in the wool trade and the other a clothier in Essex. The author has illustrated various aspects of social life of the era by drawing on such sources as account books, diaries, letters, records, and wills. She starts the work with a previously unpublished essay entitled "The Precursors," which describes the barbarian conquest of Rome. In this, she describes the lives of three men, Ausonius, Sidonius and Fortunatus and uses them to foreshadow the life that would re-emerge in the Middle Ages.
She starts by imagining a day in the life of the Peasant Bodo, in the time of Charlemagne. From her study of primarily economic documents from the Middle Ages of this time, she not only extrapolates but truly brings to life Bodo and his wife Ermentrude. From there, she goes on to the better documented life of Marco Polo, and also describes how he served as an inspiration for Columbus. Madam Eglentyne is next. Here, Power humorously details the inner workings of a gossipy nunnery and how Eglentyne would have gone about her life as an aristocratic women of God. She next details the life of a middle class Parisian housewife by studying the contents of the Menagier's Wife and validating many of it's points by citing other documents. She concludes by detailing the lives of the two Thomases; Betson and Paycocke of Coggeshall. Both are merchants and provide a chance for Power to really show off her grasp of medieval economics as well as an ability to compile disparate correspondences into a story of a life. This is a rare scholarly work that truly entertains while being read. One of the best books I've ever read.

The real taste of real life

Eileen Power studies the Middle Ages, not from an abstract historical point of view but from simple and real people and what we can know about them. I particularly like her study of Marco Polo, from his notes and diaries, which gives us a materialistic and realistic vision of what they saw of the world, and not what we want to see of what they saw. I also loved Madame Eglentyne, a prioress taken from Chaucer but at once identified to one particular prioress through real life archives and descriptions. A very interesting and useful book to enable us to capture the density of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

A great read AND an improved me.

Having never fully subscribed to self help books (the concepts are often a bit too fluffy for my scientific brain), I was pleasantly surprised with The Winner's Bible. In fact, the chatty style meant I hardly even registered that I was reading a self help book. It was easy to breeze through the pages and the diverse vignettes peppered throughout mostly added another layer to the thought process whilst allowing time to mentally digest the previous chapter.

Fortunately this easy-to-read style did not mask a lack of substance. The neuroscience background of the author means the book has scientific grounding, but it is not at all like reading some dry scientific paper. In fact, Dr Spackman has managed to expertly pitch The Winner's Bible at everyday people and manages that fine balance between being overly simplistic and therefore condescending and being too technical.

I would recommend using the website in addition to the book for some of the tools to create your personal winners bible. The website provides the structural skeleton, whereas the book provides and provokes the thoughts. However, by far the best feature of the website is the online audit. This allows your friends, family and colleagues to give anonymous feedback on how you are viewed by others - an enlightening process, if not a slightly scary concept. But as I keep telling myself, you can't fix what you don't know is broken!

On a personal level, I feel better equipped with confidence and self belief to face upcoming challenges thanks to The Winner's Bible. It was the positive changes brought about in me by The Winner's Bible that inspired me to submit this review. A world of better people would be a more stimulating and exciting place to live!

On the website, I see that the author is planning future books, which if they build on concepts in the current book should be another layer of interesting reading.

Proof is in the Pudding!!

Tired of getting to the end of another self help book and wondering where to start?
The Winners's Bible provides the tools that create permanent change.

I bought the book on July 14th 2009 though Amazon after a friend "linked me" to The Winner's Bible website.
I listened to world class athletes describe personal changes in their lives that were brought about after applying Dr Spackmans techniques and tools, and I figured if they (people who have tried everything) got results then why not me?

Anyway - about the book.

Only start this read if you've got time...not to put it down. The author writes in such a way that anyone can understand the princples. Unlike some books that I have read this one doesn't require a thesaurus.
Dr Spackman will help you understand how and why you've failed to make changes in the past. He provides practical solutions and tools, that if applied consistantly, will create permanent changes in the future.

The key for me is that this book makes it personal. No one else has the exact same issues as I do. The personal bible you create provides you with a "visual stimlulator" that really only helps one person - you. I now have a clear picture of where I am going and what personally "drives me". My energy levels have ripped to new levels because I am focused on what really matters to me. Reprogramming my automatic reponses is something I didn't know I could do before reading this book. It is crazy to think of the time and effort I have wasted in the past with books that just don't work.

I've had to apply myself; creating change requires work. If you really want to change the direction you are heading in life, if you want to be a winner, this book will help you create solutions.

If you want to regain control, then get a copy. The proof is in the pudding!!

Winner's Bible rewires and supercharges

Having read dozens of self-help and performance psychology books during my time in competitive sport, I was delighted by the contrast between The Winner's Bible and the standard neuroscience texts or pop-psychology self help books. The work is a nuts and bolts 'how to' practical guide to changing the way you go about achieving your ambitions. I read the book 6 weeks ago and followed the process - As a result I am reaping the rewards of being laser-focused, energised and the people around me have noticed a permanent change.

I highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to make a step change in their life. This stuff just works.

About the Author

Professor Gerard Delanty is Professor of Sociology and Social & Political Thought at the University of Sussex. He is the author of twelve books and editor of seven, including Handbook of Contemporary European Social Theory (Routledge, 2006). His most recent publication is The Cosmopolitan Imagination: The Social Theory Renewal of Critical Social Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2009).

This is an edited volume looking into the newly developed concept of the cultural public sphere via the lens of festivals. I have enjoyed reading it. However, it is a bit pricey, the reason why I give it a 4 star.

Had a prefect baby on these routines, and now a perfect toddler.

Excellent advice and routines. Though I didn't find the routines suitable for my child until about three months old due to feeding issues, I did however follow the sleeping guidelines at that time. Taking the time each nap to teach my child to sleep has unknowingly been a savior as I've never had a problem continuing forward. It is only now that my friends with one year olds that are still not sleeping, made me realize how thankful I was to employ the wisdom in this book. Of course with any advise you take what works for you, allow for road blocks like teething and illnesses, but get back onto the training as soon as possible. My child now tells us he wants to go to bed at a mere 13 months. Tells us when he is hungry. I put that down to Hall's advise, and our commitments to the routines.

Excellent How-to for toddlers

A fabulous book if you're looking for fail-safe instructions on how to handle everything related to a toddler's behavior and sleep. I also have Tizzie Hall's Save Our Sleep from birth to two years, and I must say that a lot of the initial sections have basically been duplicated in the toddler book, thus making them incredibly boring for anyone who's already read the baby book (that's the reason I did not rate 5 stars). Following the instructions in this book is not easy, it requires a lot of consistency and strength, but it's very worth while.

This book has literally saved our sleep! We started with Tizzie's routines when my son was about six months old. He's now two and a half and has slept 7am-7pm (plus daytime naps) without fail for two years now. I have made some adjustments (ie, less clothing to sleep in since we are in a warmer climate), but all in all the schedules have worked beautifully for us. Highly recommend!

it could have easily been compressed into 50 pages

I bought the book as I am now looking to buy a used car and thought this would be reliable source of information. Not so much. I find issues with both content and the book format.

Some older models are not even mentioned, so the title incorrectly refers to 90's models (for example my current car is not even listed). Instead, included are the reviews of pre-1980 Ford vehicles?! Half of the reviews are listed in the appendix and with very limited information. Some of the well-known problems for some of the very common models are not even mentioned (for example Mazda's rust issues, Matrix huge blind spots etc). Why does a major re-design warrant separate reviews for some models (like VW Beetle) in different sections of the book, but not for the other models? Why are European vehicles in a separate section? Wouldn't it just be more practical to list all vehicles by make/model alphabetically in only one list? First 200 pages of the book are advice about how to choose a car and negotiate the price; it could have easily been compressed into 50 pages. Overall, it feels like for new editions a few additional limited reviews are slapped at the end of the book, without any thought given to organizing the information.

Page margins are huge, taking away from the actual text space. Parts of the text are printed in light gray colour, difficult to read without strong light. The reviews are not divided into smaller section easy to read; instead they are all lumped together into huge paragraph. In a few instances, three car models are bundled into one review which makes it difficult to read.

I bought this book because it helped me get my car a decade ago but now it is now just a sloppy mess of incomplete data.

One star? Ouch, someone really disliked this book. I thought it was okay. I do disagree, however, w Phil when it comes to plug ins and hybrids, but otherwise I think his viewpoints and opinions are pretty spot on. Edmonston does deflower the mystique surrounding European luxury brands. He is also pretty candid on many of the problems accompanying Toyota and the rogue acceleration problems. I did like the service bulletins he included on various brands. I also liked the court cases and decisions he included concerning differing makes and accompanying problems. He is very bullish on the Korean makes, although he does remind us that current quality standards have not always been a Korean reality with motorcars. I think his estimation of the future of Volvo is inaccurate. Yes, they are Chinese owned now, but from what I have read the Chinese are giving the Swedes a good amount of autonomy in the development and production of the cars. He tells us which brands and models are good values and which are not. He also reminds us that it is better to buy used and to avoid new cars as a result of introductory engineering and manufacturing problems. Phil does give a back hand slap to those who write for North American car mags. He calls them little short of shills for the manufacturers who pay their bills and offer them lavish junkets around the globe. Overall an enjoyable book. There are several problems with certain models of cars I was unaware of. Neither my Volt nor my wife's Prius scored well with Phil. I take issue with his views on several points here, as for us they have been terrific cars. He does tend to cite JD Powers and Consumer Reports frequently, which is a big plus with me. If you like cars and realize that purchasing one is a major decision, this book would be worth your while.

This book could be the best investment you'll ever make

If you could only buy one book to help you buy a used car, this is it. It is by FAR better than anything else out there. I checked this out from my local library after looking through everything they had about buying a used car. Just glancing at everything else and then flipping through this one told me everything else was nearly worthless compared to this. I took this home and devoured it. Ended up buying a single-owner off-lease 2011 (2.5 years old) Honda Accord EX-L with 38,000 miles with a Honda Pre-used Certified Warranty for $16,000 from a dealer two hours from where I live. The carfax required by Honda showed me the brief history of the car and the fact that the dealer had it on his lot for 104 days and would therefore be desperate to sell. The car was pristine in and out. The service manager put the car on a rack and gave me a car great car lesson as we looked underneath, which amazingly looked new as well, not even any parking lot stop-block scratches on the front cowling underneath. The car had a brand new Honda battery, windshield, brake pads, brake rotors, fluids, up-to-date microcode, and brand new tires.

This book also confirmed everything I already knew about the ridiculously expensive parts and repair for European and hybrid autos, and it confirmed a large number of things about what cars to avoid and why that I had learned over the years from a very good friend who owned and operated a professional auto repair shop for 20 years.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book and carefully study it before buying a used car. It'll be one of the best investments you'll ever make.
