As a certified personal and executive coach, Valorie Burton actually works herself out of her job. You see, her most meaningful goal is to teach her clients to coach themselves. I've not ever utilized a personal coach, so I found Valorie's book, Successful Women Think Differently, a dynamic tool to help yourself help yourself through God's power.

The questions Valorie proposes make you dig deep into yourself to really find out who you are and what makes you tick. It's not a haphazard trip, but a methodical journey in changing the way you think so you can succeed in whatever area you need help. Valorie uses typical, personal accounts of real people and how they accomplished this task. They help to convey her message succinctly. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

I read this book in order to provide my review, but it's a book I will need to go back to and answer the questions to glean new insights for myself. In other words, this is a hands-on book. It's a powerful tool if you are willing to invest your time working it through. I highly recommend this book for personal study or even use in a discreet Bible study ("What's said in this room stays in this room" type).

In each case, the friction of competing criteria of worth promoted an organizational reflexivity that made it easier for the company to change and deal with market uncertainty. Drawing on John Dewey's notion that "perplexing situations" provide opportunities for innovative inquiry, Stark argues that the dissonance of diverse principles can lead to discovery.

Shaking the sociology of organization

This is a very welcome challenge to the prevailing consensus among organizational theorists (neo institutionalists). Instead of searching for "taken-for-granted" norms, procedures etc. as a way of explaining everything out there, Stark looks on the very cognizant, reflective manner through which actors build and dismantle institutions. The message is liberating--no longer to we need to look for things in the darkness that our subjects fail to see (that the analysts somehow is able to see). Rather, the goal of the analyst is to analyze the surface of behavior--to see how people consciously navigate their life. Not only is this approach more empirically oriented and realist, it also yields important insights regarding the role of consensus and lack of consensus in organization and more. This is like a breath of fresh air to both organizational theorists and economic sociologists!

Excellent sociological exploration of innovation in organizations

You might not get it from the title, but this book is about the conditions that lead to creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in organizations. According to Stark, the presence of competing notions of value within an organization, or what he calls "dissonance," is one such fundamental condition.

A sociologist, Stark marshals the methodological and interpretive tools of his discipline to make his case. The book is a series of three "ethnographies" of modern creative companies, and Stark's analytical framework draws on figures in the tradition from John Dewey to Bruno Latour. But Stark also self-consciously expands his approach into what he calls "economic sociology." Whereas sociologists are often said to study values while economists study value, for Stark, value and values are part of the same complex, the same conversation, the same negotiation that results in companies creating new things.

The writing is crisp and engaging, driven by narrative in the ethnographies, but equally compelling in the analytical sections. The heart of Stark's argument -- and what he discovers in three very different cases -- is that organizations are better innovators who allow and encourage their members to use and express diverse ideas about the worth of their work, products, services, what have you. Stark writes, "The coexistence of multiple, principled standpoints means that no standopint can be taken for granted as the natural order of things. Creative friction yields and organizational reflexivity."

So, in a for-profit company making widgets, perhaps the marketing person looks for PR potential, the programmer for technical sophistication, the designer for beauty, the accountant for costs. Obvious, right? But the key to spurring innovation is to empower each of these points of view in a governance structure Stark calls heterarchy. "Heterarchy represents an organizational form of distributed intelligence in which units are laterally accountable according to diverse principles of evaluation," he writes.

Today, the old consensus on top-down management -- e.g. chain of command, "running a tight ship," etc. -- is disappearing. Hierarchies are not responsive enough to innovate and change directions quickly. Stark's heterarchies might be. And, of course, "innovation" and "survival" are increasingly synonymous. While this book is not exactly a survival guide, it offers compelling principles and cases that illustrate how and why organizations survive or not in our time.

About the Author
Gene Brucker is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the Medieval Academy of America and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as a foreign member of the Dep utazione di Storia Patria per la Toscana. Among his many books on medieval history and the Renaissance are Renaissance Florence (1969, California, 1983), and Giovanni and Lusanna: Love and Marriage in Renaissance Florence (California, 1986).

A fascinating bird�s eye view of Florence

The word "amateur" comes from the Italian "amare" which means to love and this is a book for anyone with an interest in and affection for Italian city states and Florence in particular. Mr. Gene Brucker is a distinguished American historian (University of California, Berkeley) with an admirable record but the book he has produced about Florence is meant for the general reader and obviously aims at sharing his passion for the quattrocento (Florence's golden age, the 15th century and beyond) with as many people as possible. The result is splendid : in seven chapters dealing with the great families, the economy, the forms of government, the Florentine dominion, the Principato, etc., the reader is taken through a pleasant voyage in history. The writing is never heavy but neither is it meant for those who give up easily : some of the chapters - on the conflicts between Guelfs and Ghibellines for instance - do require more than a passing interest in the subject. The book is lavishly illustrated and contains a number of separate "two pagers" I greatly enjoyed, which present a number of interesting topics in themselves, such as the description of a city plan, the features of a traditional Florentine palazzo, the currencies in use, the reach of Florentine trade, the guilds, Andrea del Verocchio, the geometric theory of perspective and many other topics. An admirable book, to be highly recommended.

If you want to know about the most beautiful city on Earth during the Renaissance, look no further than this title. The author provides detailed information on everything you could want to know. Perfect for the history buff, lover of art, Florence-fanatic, or tourist headed to Italy. Much better than Michael Levey's Florence.

Penned by an eminent historian, this book is superb! Very striking is Brucker's unique narrative style. He makes the readers think as if the events happened only yesterday. I strongly recommend his other works as well: You will feel enlightened. No other historian can capture the cultural richness of Florence with such delightful charm. I guarantee you'll fall in love with the city, her citizens, and this historian, Gene Adam Brucker.

Amazing Book !!! A Must Buy!!!

This book is AMAZING!! I am currently a pre nursing major student and this book is required in my class. The book gives amazing details and amazing use of analogies to understand each chapter. It is so interesting to read and I will defiantly be keeping it for future references instead of reselling it. I recommend anyone who is a nursing major student, going into the medical field, or anyone just interested in healthy dieting and nutrition essentials to purchase this. funny!

I found this novelette funny and a great read!

I only had one issue with it... It was too short! I know it is a novelette, it is supposed to be short but I fell in love with Jen and really wanted more story. No one wants to leave when they are having a good time and I was having a wonderful time.

The book opens to a disgruntled Jen coming into the office and listening to her boss' latest sexual moon driven episode. Her office is a huge mess because apparently her boss Rob decided that her desk and the area around it needed to be christened with his love pheromones. Several things happen and I followed it, completely rooting for Jen to get the guy.

Jen and Rob are both shifters. Rob is the big bad wolf and Jen the little bitty mouse. This could cause a problem but with the help of a little magic she thinks might have a way to fix their problem. This results in a hilarious episode where the heroine needs saving.

I really want to read the rest of the books now that I have had a taste of this little one. I am rating it 4 out of 5.

got this book first before I found out there was a box set. oh well great book the set gives you 5 books to this series and they are great when you can read them back to back. And I did and did a review of the whole box set. full of suspense and treats that make it enjoyable cause it keeps you on your toes.

Great Idea!

Just when I think I've seen all the possibilities of shifters, Jeanette Raleigh surprises me with something new. The fact that Jen shifts into a mouse is amusing, but you can also feel the shame the character feels. When she decides to try an amulet that will give her the power to turn into a wolf the book gets even better. If you love paranormal romance, give this one a try.

About the Author
Walt Heyer became fascinated with people who change genders in 1980 while working in San Francisco. Walt has walked and talked with transgenders and seen the unintended consequences of changing genders. In the 25 years since his psychology studies in drug and alcohol dependence at U.C. Santa Cruz, Walt has worked with people who have a strong desire to put the pieces of their lives back together.

Thanks Walt! I wish doctors and psychiatrists had your courage to speak out against this booming trend of medical disfigurement.

I admire the courage that Walt had to write this book and tell the sad story of how doctors, psychiatrists, and therapists have either out of personal agenda or political correctness colluded to destroy the lives of confused children, teens, and adults through gender hormones and sexual reassignment surgery. The dirty little secret is that professionals would lose their licenses or be boycotted to the point of ruin by speaking out against the booming trend of transgenderism. Money is driving the transgender train -- either because of the means to financial gain or the fear of financial loss.

What's even sadder is that this has moved into the world of pediatrics. Doctors such as Dr. Spack of the Children's Hospital in Boston and Dr. Olsen of the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles are administering hormones to children to change their bodies so that they appear more like the opposite sex. This process can begin as early as age 9 and renders them sterile by 16 years old! Following a few years of hormone therapy, many patients are given "gender reassignment" -- breasts and/or genitalia are surgically altered or removed. This is happening at CHILDREN'S hospitals! These doctors are paid handsomely to do it!!! Children are truly in the hands of mad scientists. Where is the outcry? Who will protect these children? The FDA is supposed to protect us from harmful medicine, yet doctors are able to administer hormones and hormone blockers to children? We won't let kids drink alcohol until their 21, but we'll pump hormones in their bodies without any consideration for what the long-term effects may be.

I hope, I really hope, that doctors and psychologists will read Walt's book and find the courage to step forward. Read Walt's account of what happened in the early and middle 1900s with medically sanctioned lobotomies. It's chilling! Thousands upon thousands of children and adults who were anxious, depressed, or simply hard to handle were given lobotomies as "treatment" for their conditions. This practice went on for many years until brave scientists and doctors presented evidence that finally proved it to be a heinous practice. But while skeptics remained silent over the years of its practice, thousands of people were maimed or killed at the hand of doctors, and countless lives were destroyed. Let's not let that happen to our loved ones today. Let's help them to love themselves for who they are, rather than letting them be butchered into who they think they should be.

Please, when you're commenting on this phenomenon, don't bring God into it. The only thing that does is encourage those advocates who say, "See? They're all religious nuts." This is not about religion; this is about a world gone terribly wrong. It is about folks plowing full speed ahead without any science to back them up. It's about using confused people as guinea pigs in an insane transgender experiment.

Informative Book

I recently read this book and found it to be very informative. It contains subject matter that is certainly not easy to read about. Being a California resident we (the citizens) may soon be forced to call a boy a girl by a law, AB 1266, which was written and introduced by gay legislatures. This law may force us to call a boy a girl but we will only be pretending. As this book points out, a boy is a boy and a girl is a girl. To say otherwise is not compassionate and it certainly is not accurate nor healthy medical advice for anyone in our community including the transgendered individual.

Having himself gone through the nightmare experience of Transsexuality, in this book, Walt Heyer shows true compassion for the transgendered individual. My hat is off to him.

Every book shelf should have Paper Genders.

I personally know the author, and he is exceptionally qualified to know all about the transgender lifestyle due to living in that mode for several years prior to returning to his God-given male gender. An excellent book!
