Retitle to CISSP Prep Guide

For some reason this huge book is mistitled. It should be called “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Security” or “The CISSP Preparation Guide”. At 699 pages in hardcover, along with a CD filled with additional material, you could hurt someone with this book. It is big and powerful in a literary and physical sense.

Nobody has ever said that security is a small topic. This guide illustrates the depth and vastness of our field in an elegant way. At first glance, you may be intimidated by the enormous amount of information filled through all the pages and across all the chapters. Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian did a great job of picking apart all the subtopics that are needed to know if you want to pass the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner certification.

More importantly, this book is an excellent prep guide for taking the CISSP and for getting a good job in this ever growing profession. The pay is good here, too. To be completely honest, the pay is damn good in this field and there is a massive shortage of qualified people in this profession. Grab this book and start learning.

Now for the bad news. This is my own opinion and has nothing to do with the great work that the authors did on this book. The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner is being advertised as a big step up from their Security + certification. For those of you who don’t know, the Security + is a baby step certificate. It is a license to get your foot in the door, to learn even more.

The CASP is an 85 question exam. I was at first shocked to read this in the book until I began laughing at the meaning of this. My daughter in elementary school has exams that have this many questions on them. The permit to register my dog has this many questions on it. For all you certificate-touting security folks out there, here is a quick and easy cert to add to your last name. For the length and depth of information in this guide written by Robin Abernathy and Troy McMillian, I was expecting a heck of a better exam than 85 questions.

The exam is pass or fail according to this book. What constitutes a pass versus a fail in unknown and not listed. In some exams, 70% is a passing grade. If the CASP requires a 70% passing grade out of 85 questions, than getting your name correct on the exam is half the battle. The CISSP is 250 questions, of which 50 questions are demo questions to see if those questions should be used in other exams. Weird, huh? However, a bachelor’s degree is four years of studying and testing. A master’s is another two years of more intense and deeper studying. A PhD in Cyber Security, which I’m working on, is quite a bit into the realm of ridiculously intense research and study.

Based on Department of Defense Directive 8570, you will qualify for more jobs with a CASP and even more with a CISSP than I will with a PhD. It doesn’t make sense but it doesn’t have too because it’s the government, enough said.

Now, back to the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner. Don’t start reading the introduction if you aren’t sure about taking the CASP. The introduction will scare the heck out of you because it covers such a huge amount of information and topics. Security is an ocean. You will need to know the top ½ of the surface of one harbor in that ocean to pass either the CASP or the CISSP. The book introduction gives you a good picture of how deep that ocean really is and it’s scary if you’ve never pondered the reality of this profession.

So don’t read the intro unless you are ready to understand how deep the rabbit hole goes. The authors did a good job of scaring you with the introduction. They do an even better job of scaring you with the first chapter on Cryptology. Most other security books place this topic near the middle or back of the book. Not Robin and Troy, they go right for your weak spot. Theory and practical application are covered quite well. They kept to the basics of each topic, which is a nice refresher for me but might be a bit much for others new to the field.

Each chapter has Key Topic markers letting you know that you might want to pay attention to this page or paragraph. The problem is, the whole book is a key topic. Every word written is important even though it probably won’t be on the 85 question exam. The chapters end with a review of concepts and multiple choice questions. The questions are worded to reflect exactly what you would expect from the exam because the book is written by the folks who made the certification.

The book even comes with information on how and where to take the test plus a 10% off exam voucher. If I haven’t made myself clear enough, this guild is much more than an exam prep for the CASP. This book is an excellent primer for the CISSP; it just isn’t broken down into the ten domains of that exam. Think about it this way, if you read this book and take the CASP you are about 80% towards taking the CISSP exam with that knowledge. It is worth the price to grab this Pearson Certification book followed by one CISSP prep book. Then, you’ll have two very good certs and a nice job while I’m still serving hamburgers at a fast food joint with my PhD.

Great book, puts you in a fast track and ...

Great book, puts you in a fast track and does not lose time on things you were suppose to know at this level.
However, cryptography points scattered on the book could use extra work, as the first chapter does. Cryptography seems to be to weakest part of the book, strangely with a dedicated first chapter. I would recommend skipping the first chapter if you have a cryptography background, but it is a good start if the concepts seems unfamiliar, it is presented in a professional language, maybe an academic book would be a nice complement to this reading.
Overall, it is a massive source of knowledge, nicely organized for learning and reviewing (I will keep this book around).

Passed on the first try with significant assistance from this book.

Got this for my wife who is not a security engineer but was required to get a mid level IT security certification. Upon first reading I was aghast at how difficult it was to get a grasp of the material from just reading this book - and I have an MS in CS from a top tier grad school. After speaking with others in the IT field, I discovered that the certification is intended for people that already have some experience working as professional IT security engineers. This book seems intended for such experienced people. After my wife took (and passed) the exam, and after looking at materials she was provided by a training class in advance of the exam, I realized that this book actually covered more of the concepts and definitions included on the exam than any other reference material we used. In fact, there was nothing on the exam that was not covered in this book. Even the language and writing style seemed consistent with that used on the actual exam.

With these words, in The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer gave powerful voice to the millions of Christians who believe personal sacrifice is an essential component of faith. Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor and theologian, was an exemplar of sacrificial faith: he opposed the Nazis from the first and was eventually imprisoned in Buchenwald and hung by the Gestapo in 1945. The Cost of Discipleship, first published in German in 1937, was Bonhoeffer's answer to the questions, "What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us to-day?" Bonhoeffer's answers are rooted in Lutheran grace and derived from Christian scripture (almost a third of the book consists of an extended meditation on the Sermon on the Mount). Without a doubt, the book that has most changed my life is Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship. It is incredible. I first read it at Bible college and then read it again three years ago. Bonhoeffer writes about cheap grace - how we can make the gospel what people want to hear so that we get a bigger response- and how we must fight against that. As an evangelist, I can sometimes feel the temptation to give a softer message to get more people responding, but actually we need to be true to the message that belongs to God. "He Who Learns Must Suffer . . .

"And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God." These words of Aeschylus echoed through me time and time again as I read Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Cost of Discipleship". This was not an easy book to read. I do not think it was meant to be easy.

Bonhoeffer was a person of limitless courage and faith. Born 1906 in Breslau, Germany to a prosperous family Bonhoeffer studied theology and completed his doctoral thesis when he was 21. He rose to some measure of fame in the 1930s by virtue of his writings and radio sermons.

The rise of Adolph Hitler ran parallel to Bonhoeffer's own rise and it was opposition to the evils of Nazi-ism that compelled Bonhoeffer to put his words into actions, actions that cost him his life. As is set out in the introductory memoir in this edition, Bonhoeffer understood immediately that Hitler and his national socialist ideology represented a grave threat to Germans, to Christianity, and to western civilization. In a radio adress he gave in February, 1933 Bonhoeffer denounced Hitler and denounced his fellow Germans for accepting a corrupt and inhumane leader and system as its idol. Although Bonhoeffer spent a great deal of time living in England, safe from harm, he understood that he could not in good conscience "participate in the reconstruction of Christian life in Germany after the war if I do not share the trials of this time with my people." Bonhoeffer returned to Germany in 1939 to take up the struggle against Nazi-ism. He had to have known that his return would lead to his death but he knew he could not do otherwise. He was called and he obeyed that call without question.

Bonhoeffer was arrested in 1943 after being caught assisting the escape of a number of Jews from Germany. On April 8, 1945, with Allied troops only days from liberating his prison, Bonhoeffer was executed on the orders of Hitler by the S.S. Black Guards. One cannot read the Cost of Discipleship without an acute understanding that his writings on sacrifice, on obedience, and on the cost of grace were mirrored by his actions.

Cost of Discipleships consists of a series of set pieces on grace, justification, and obedience to God. This was a tough book to read for two reasons. First, I grew up in a tradition in which words like grace and justification were concepts best left for other denominations. I had to think about the meaning and context of those words in order to understand what he was saying. Second, Bonhoeffer does not speak to his reader in the manner of a kindly, easy-going grandfather. Rather, he speaks in the manner of the strict drill instructor in boot camp whose manner is designed to hit you in the face with your own (and his) inadequacies until you break. As you read further the purpose behind Bonhoeffer's harsh manner evidences itself. Like the drill instructor his purpose is not to be harsh for the sake of harshness but to save your neck once you leave boot camp and make your way to the front lines. The drill instructor is harsh to help ensure your survival. Bonhoeffer is harsh to help one seek salvation through faith.

The book begins with a section entitled The Call to Discipleship. Each step of the way Bonhoeffer sets up a test, a test that this reader invariably fails each step of the way. He discusses `cheap grace', the kind where "my only duty as a Christian is to eave the world for an hour or so on a Sunday morning and go to church to be assured that my sins are all forgiven." Bonhoeffer asserts that if one `believes' one must obey and if one does not obey they cannot believe. He argues that prayer should be hidden, not public. Too often public prayer in churches is nothing more than `empty noise'. Further, he suggests that our own good deeds, like our prayer, should be hidden. If we perform righteous acts to receive a pat on the back from our friends or family it is valueless to God. It was hard not to recognize myself every step of the way. It clearly must have been Bonhoeffer's intent to have us feel this discomfort and if so he did a remarkably good job of it.

Bonhoeffer suggests that too many people feel they must know the path they are about to follow before beginning their spiritual journey. In fact, Bonhoeffer claims the opposite is the case. He argues that we will find out once we begin: "plunge into the deep waters beyond your own comprehension, and I will help you to comprehend even as I do."

The heart of Cost of Discipleship is found in Bonhoeffer's extensive examination of the Sermon on the Mount. It is at once both illuminating and powerful. Again, Bonhoeffer's own life provides justification for the argument that the call to discipleship is not easy and will likely bring pain and suffering but that it can be done if one so chooses. The fact that I have no doubt that I lack the wherewithal to act in a similar fashion is both depressing and challenging. How does one respond to such a challenge? Such wisdom as I acquire from this book will, no doubt, come drop by drop and with no small amount of pain.

This is a compelling book for anyone interested in matters of faith and the role of faith in contemporary society.

Not the Best Place to Start a Worthwhile Study of Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is without question a hero of the Christian Faith, and one would be well served to study his thoughts, theology, commitment and example. But this is probabaly not the place to start, for two reasons.

(1) The writing style of this book is badly outdated and hard to follow and understand. This book badly needs an editor to put Bonhoeffer's thoughts into more modern prose. This book, as it is, is a difficult and at times convoluted read. A new updated editon is badly needed.

(2)Secondly, and more importantly, this book is early Bonhoeffer,full of didactic thought, at times morally pompus. A better place to start a study of Bonhoeffer might be his last work, "Letters from Prison..." written at the end of his life. this work is the more seasoned, more mature Bonhoeffer, a man who has seen to some the degree the mistakes and folly of his earlier thinking.

Case in point: In this work, Bonhoeffer says to be a disciple a man must separate himself from the everyday living of life. In the later book, "Letters from Prison," he writes, it is "only by living completely in the world that one learns to have faith..." He says he stands by his earlier book because he wrote it, it is his work, but he makes it clear that if he had it to do over again, his thought would be different and he would express himself in a way much more understanding of the world in which we live.

For that reason, "Letters From Prison..." would be the best place to get the complete, aged and wise Bonhoeffer.

This book is on a whole different level from any theological/doctrinal book I have read in a long time. Scripture based, the thoughts, ideas and principles shared in this book are challenging and enlightening. I can't explain what Bonhoeffer's perspective on discipleship has done for my own personal commitment to Christ and my pursuit of Him.

Amid his lies, distortions, evasions, half-truths, and startling admissions, Eichmann fully acknowledges the reality of the Holocaust while attempting to minimize his central role in its execution. As his life from traveling salesman to mass murderer unfolds, Eichmann's defense becomes a chilling self-indictment and a warning of Evil's often unassuming visage.

About the Author

ONEWhat Is a Translation?Douglas Hofstadter took a great liking to this short poem by the sixteenth-century French wit Clément Marot:Ma mignonne, Je vous donne Le bon jour; Le séjour C'est prison. Guérison Recouvrez, Puis ouvrez Votre porte Et qu'on sorte Vitement, Car Clément Le vous mande. Va, friande De ta bouche, Qui se couche En danger Pour manger Confitures;Si tu dures Trop malade, Couleur fade Tu prendras, Et perdras L'embonpoint. Dieu te doint Santé bonne, Ma mignonne.He sent a copy of it to a great number of his friends and acquaintances and asked them to translate it into English, respecting as well as they could the formal properties that he identified in it:(1) 28 lines (2) of 3 syllables each (3) in rhyming couplets (4) with the last line being the same as the first; (5) midway the poem changes from formal (vous) to informal (tu) and (6) the poet puts his own name directly into the poem.1Hofstadter, a cognitive scientist at Indiana University, got many dozens of responses over the following months and years. Each one of them was different, yet each one of them was without doubt a translation of Marot's little poem. By this simple device he demonstrated one of the most awkward and wonderful truths about translation. It is this: any utterance of more than trivial length has no one translation; all utterances have innumerably many acceptable translations.You get the same result with ordinary prose as you do with a poem. Give a hundred competent translators a page to translate, and the chances of any two versions being identical are close to zero. This fact about interlingual communication has persuaded many people that translation is not an interesting topic--because it is always approximate, it is just a second-rate kind of thing. That's why "translation" isn't the name of a long-established academic discipline, even though its practitioners have often been academics in some other field. How can you have theories and principles about a process that comes up with no determinate results?Like Hofstadter, I take the opposite view. The variability of translations is incontrovertible evidence of the limitless flexibility of human minds. There can hardly be a more interesting subject than that.What is it that translators really do? How many different kinds of translating are there? Everything you always wanted to know about translation... in an odd nutshell

As someone who comes from a family of translators and who has worked in translation himself, I am utterly glad that someone has come up with a book like this, an honest and passionate attempt to unveil the world of translation to the average person and spark the debate among the more knowledgeable ones.

In attempting to write a book that covers, well, pretty much everything about translation, David Bellos has produced a comprehensive and badly needed primer full of insight, yet a not-so coherent and cohesive unity. The book is divided into 32 small sections (yes, 32), each dealing with a different aspect of translation, from the meaning of "meaning", to the alleged "myth" of literal translation, with newswires and the ridiculous sophistication of coffee-shop language somewhere in-between. Some of these sections are delightful and concisely written, others are riddled with analogies and humorous attempts that distract from the main topic, yet others are frankly repetitive or well under-developed. The result is less a piece that seems to flow from chapter to chapter, but rather something that feels at times like a collection of disparate short essays that rumble from bananas to bibles to eskimos and back to translation. While some chapters indeed perform liaisons to previous or following ones, sadly that is not the overall feeling that one gets when tackling the text.

I guess this is the unavoidable result of attempting to put together so many different topics under a single umbrella, while trying to give equal importance to each and every single one. But my other assumption is that the book could have greatly benefited from a better editing job, which in turn would have resulted in a more 'natural' feeling to the final product.

On the other hand, I do not necessarily agree with everything that Mr. Bellos asserts and the way he does it (but that is a whole different story). I believe he gives too much credence to his own opinions and parades them as axioms, without even considering or giving some space to alternative or critical views. The issue of 'literal translation' is a good -but no the only one- example of this. According to the author's Manichean vision, a literal translation is 'not really' a translation and is such a daunting and fictitious task that is almost not worth trying. This whole argument is sustained in a verbal and semantic pirouette, given that he later on acknowledges that it really all depends on what 'literal' and, yes, 'translation' means to you. However, he does not even bother in considering the opinion of someone who believes that a literal translation (or something close to it) is possible. It simply can not happen, period. One wonders whether he is representing the entire translation community or just speaking for himself which, based on reading his text, is quite hard to tell.

Now, on the positive side, the book is full of pearls of wisdom and clever insights into the world of translating. I really hope that this work contributes to spreading the word on the invaluable contribution of translators all over the world, and I hope as well that next time Mr. Bellos will find a better editor.

Disappointing

As someone who has been trained and has worked as a professional translator, I really wanted to like this book. But, alas, for professionals, it provides no new insight. And it seems too dry for non-professionals.

What do you mean?

It would probably be perfectly possible these days - using Blue Tooth, WiFi and internet sites - to manufacture the "Fish" of the title - but the "instant translation" would suffer all the usual problems that David Bellos lays out for our reading in his marvelous book.
I do so agree with the blurb from Michael Hofmann of the UK Guardian who simply says "Please do read David Bellos's brilliant book."

About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Dr. Simon is the lead author of Campbell Essential Biology and Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology .

Great text book Fantastic online resources

It didn't arrive when it said but I still got it before class started. Make sure you allow at least 10 business days for it to arrive. It came undamaged, and exactly what it said it was with access card and all. Great text book. Super easy to follow along and understand the concepts. Online tools and pre tests saved my life. Tutor sessions was good. If your looking to understand the basics of biology and just get through a class great book to help or you can just get the online access card and use the online tools. I would definitely recommend the online help to any person taking a college level biology high school course or course in college for a GE credit.

BEWARE - Inactive Access Code

BEWARE - Access code does not work. Purchased this textbook new specifically to ensure receipt of a new access card. But the code is INACTIVE. Publisher denies responsibility since "item was not purchased directly". Very disappointed in Amazon.
