About the Author
The Marvel and Other Short Stories is a collected anthology of six short stories written by the winners of the Austin Macauley World Book Day short story competition.
Raleigh Trevelyan, a direct descendant of Sir Walter Raleigh, was for many years a distinguished publisher; his previous books include T"he Fortress" and "Rome 44". For two decades he combed the British, Spanish, Italian, and his own family s archives to write the authoritative life story of Sir Walter Raleigh, first published in 2002. He lives in London and Cornwall.

I'm Not Sure How To Rate This Book

I bought this as an aid. I needed something to keep my Italian fresh. But the problem is, I only took one year of Italian at my college and that wasn't enough to read this book easily.
I should have known I'd have problems understanding this... I found myself studying the book rather than reading it. I think it had something to do with Italian phrases. I kept looking back and forth from Italian to English and there were many sentences that didn't seem to translate the way I would translate it. I'm guessing that was the cause of my trouble. If you read the intro, you'll see that the translators tried to stay true to the beauty of the words that were written in Italian and tried to do the same in English... so the translation's not exact. I would have to familiar myself with phrases before I can pick this book up again.
The intro also gives you suggestions on which story to read first. Apparently there was a story that many people found easier to read within this book... but I still found it tricky.
I don't recommend this for beginners, nor intermediates. I would say you'd have to be advanced and already know how to have a conversation with a native speaker before buying this book for a leisure read. Familiarize yourself with Italian phrases, and know the grammar. For vocabulary that unusually to you, it should be noted where you can go to the footnotes that's in the back of the book and read the definition.
Penguin classics are usually good. I showed this book to my professor and he liked it. So this book must be good... lol, I just can't understand it.

Good reading

This book is invaluable for a student of Italian literature. Since there are always many words that a student does not know, it is a lot of fun to read the Italian and quickly check with the English for the meaning. The stories are good, too.

The book is not as advertise - "for learning Italian." It is relatively advanced, especially in its use of passato remote.
