Scary, simplistic advice; there is no such thing as "easy" money

There are so many issues with this book, it is difficult to even know where to start. As with all "do this and you will make tons of money" books, the first thing to look at are the assumptions and assumed projections, which are usually how authors manage to get to their "amazing" returns. Lichtenfeld suggests that investors need to focus on just three things: initial yield, dividend growth rate, and payout ratio. There is nothing about assessing the quality of the underlying business and the book does not touch on valuation of the businesses. For starters, there are no guarantees that a company paying a big dividend will continue to do so, particularly in down markets.
Tellingly, the author presents some historical data showing how well dividend stocks have done in the past and guesses where they will go in the future, but then provides no proof that his system can produce the results he claims in actual practice. Even in his "Perpetual Income Portfolio" he does not report its long-term returns nor the stocks in it.
There certainly is a spot in a portfolio for high dividend stock, but as anyone knows by now, there is no "surefire" way to have double digit returns. Blue chips, high dividend, emerging markets, small cap stocks, they all sound great until they are not. Also, note there are much better books far better books on dividend growth investing out there like The Dividend Toolkit by Matt Alden and The Single Best Investment by Lowell Miller.
So, dividend stocks may be a good part of a portfolio, but this book misses on a lot of critical issues.

Decent, but Over-promises With Unrealistic Expectations

The book starts off well. There is lots of useful information and informative historical data and charts.
But the further you read the more you realize that the "assumptions" in the endless examples are far too optimistic. The author promises you can achieve yields of "at least" 11%, and total returns of 12% per year. The book tells you you should seek stocks with 4.7% dividend yield. That part is doable. But then it adds that you should look for stocks with dividends that grow 10% per year. That combination is much too optimistic in the real world. You can find stocks whose dividends grow at 10%, but they generally have yields between 1 and 3 percent. You can also find stocks that provide 4.7% yield. But they rarely grow at 10% per year, and even if they do it is only for short spurts of time. The combination of 4.7% and 10% dividend growth is nearly impossible to find in companies you've heard of.
The author publishes a newsletter which recommends certain stocks for his portfolio. But does he share any of those stocks in this book? No! His reason is that by the time you read his book the recommendations might be out of date.
I gave this book 3 stars because it should have been better. The author writes in an easy to read style, and like I said, much of the information is very useful and interesting. But any book on this topic ("dividend investing") should provide a more realistic selection criteria with more predictably achievable goals. Perhaps if instead of his 10-11-12 slogan, he had set 10-7-8 as a more realistic goal I would have preferred it. I preferred the Bruce Miller book on Retirement Investing for Income Only.

What I like most is how easy it is to make money.

What I like most is how easy it is to make money. Marc Lichtenfeld's 10-11-12 system really is the "set it and forget it" system that actually works. So many times if you don't monitor your investments every day (no matter how "easy" they're supposed to be)...something goes wrong and you lose money. Not with this. I use this book to set up my dividend investments...how to tweak it over time if I want to...learn how I'm making money (I sound like an expert to my family when I'm really not)...and, most important, I'm actually making money! I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to make solid money investing, no matter how old or how experienced.
