Written in the era of the bookmaker, before pari-mutuel wagering became the norm, there is much here that is now obsolete. However, there is still much that is just as true now as it was then. For example, the condition of a horse, the importance of weight, the importance of the jockey and trainer. No examples given of how Phil actually handicapped a race in the era before speed figures - so don't expect much help there.

The book's primary value is for its historic insight into the thinking of a successful horse-player back in the day.

During the 20th century, catatonia all but dropped off the agenda of mainstream psychiatric research. However, several dedicated research groups, represented in this volume, continued to report original data highlighting catatonia as a relevant and ideal subject for clinical study.

This book, which exemplifies the unparalleled breadth of the knowledge gained, will benefit clinicians managing catatonic phenomena as well as researchers interested in pursuing further investigations. It covers in great detail the psychopathology and neurobiology of catatonia, focusing on the history, epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disorder.

In addition to offering practical information for clinicians, Catatonia aims to stimulate new investigations. It includes a discussion of the genetics of catatonia as well as descriptions of little-known animal models useful for research on the disorder. Catatonia is uniquely suited for neuropsychiatric research: it is objectively observable, and responds dramatically to specific treatments. Promising and testable etiologic hypotheses have been proposed and may shed light on mechanisms underlying endogenous psychoses.

Clinical discussions are presented in the context of neurobiological findings, highlighting the richness and intellectual attraction of the study of the disorder. About the Author

Dr. Stanley N. Caroff is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Chief of Inpatient Services at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also serves as Director of the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Information Service and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States.

Stephan C. Mann, M.D., is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Director of Clinical Psychopharmacology at the Mental Health Clinic of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also serves on the Professional Advisory Council of the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Information Service.

Andrew Francis, Ph.D., M.D., is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine, where he is Chief of Inpatient Services and Medical Director of the Day Treatment Program. He also serves on the Professional Advisory Council of the Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Information Service.

Gregory Fricchione, M.D., is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School and Associate Chief of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he also serves as Director of the Division of Psychiatry and Medicine and Director of the Division of International Psychiatry.

Jesus will set you FREE!

My name is Elisa, I'm from Oregon and this is my tetimony.
I was introduced to the finished works of Jesus Christ 4 years ago while I was in the Washington psychiatric hospital. At that time, this book was not yet published but was worked on with *everything that's included in this book; 7 steps to freedom. All that's included here comes from the word of God. I was 19 at the time and for the last 15 Years or so, I had been living a true life of bondage, torture and misery. I had been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, major depression with severe psychosis and borderline personality disorder. I stuggled with drugs and alcohol and addiction to self mutilation. I was heavily medicated with anti depressants, anti psychotics, hypnotics, and anti anxiety medications. A group of psychiatrists finally decided I had schizophrenia too. Because of my "mental illness", I Was unable to live a good life, could not finish school, work, live! I would cringe and dig my nails into myself to try to stop my self from hurting myself, but it only got worse with the years. Later I had lost all control. I frequently lost touch of reality, acted on rage and impulsively and had frequent suicide attempts. I have been hospitalized in every psych unit in Portland area. I had no hope, no future, and no life. I lived with post traumatic stress that would torture me in my sleep and while awake, I lived a life of absolute fear, stress, and anxiety.
Upon my what I like to call "treatment", I was guaranteed that Jesus would set me free. I never forgot that. That stuck to me, no one had ever said that to me. Pat and another pastor, along with the support of a small church worked hard with me. I was determined and desperate! I could no longer live like this. With coaching, I learned to develop a spiritual understanding. To me this was all new, but that was ok. As long as I wanted out, I was going to receive what was guaranteed. On a daily basis i worked on my problems. I gained trust, strength and power. I was beginning to get a hang on this. After resisting, resisting, resisting, I begun to overcome these oppressions. Sure I fell a few times and felt like giving up, but I was always encouraged to get back up and fight!! I continued fighting the good fight. 5 months later, I was set free!!! I was not coping with "my illnesses, I was freed!! The chains were not loosened, they were broken off!!! I was free! Thank you Jesus! My life changed so drastically, it took me a year to finally accept it, to get use to living free! It was just too new, too wonderful, so rich. I NOW LIVE A LIFE OF FREEDOM AND AN ABUNDANT LIFE, AND SO CAN YOU :) It's been 4 wonderful years of freedom, no coping, freedom! Thank you Jesus.

Jesus has set me free

I was a drug addict/criminal for 28 years and I have used the step in this book to overcome the old self defeating behaviors. This book has given me the understanding on how to fight and walk in freedom and to help others overcome. The steps in this book have given me something I never thought I would ever have....LIFE. I highly recommend it. GREAT BOOK.
