Written in the era of the bookmaker, before pari-mutuel wagering became the norm, there is much here that is now obsolete. However, there is still much that is just as true now as it was then. For example, the condition of a horse, the importance of weight, the importance of the jockey and trainer. No examples given of how Phil actually handicapped a race in the era before speed figures - so don't expect much help there.
The book's primary value is for its historic insight into the thinking of a successful horse-player back in the day.

Interesting informative about history of handicapping development. I was confused there was a hit man with one of the five families named "Pittsburg Phil" I thought he was the same guy as the handicapper. Not so! RIP Pittsburg Phil.
