A good guide for living our faith.
By Sarah B.
I’ll admit I was intrigued by the cover and the title more than actually wanting to read the book by the description because I really don’t have the time to add more books to my TBR pile, but I’m so glad I got sucked in to this book. As a fellow “book nerd” or more scholarly, bibliophile I liked that instead of just reading Valerie wanted to actually live what she was learning. I think one thing we tend to forget is that we all, or most of us read, self help books but do we turn to the real self help book? Not usually – we tend to think it’s dated or not relevant to our world today, which in these last few months I have realized how wrong that really is, using Scripture and insights from other books Valerie gives us helps in becoming women who really live their faith.
I really enjoyed the chapter on having a truly rest filled Sabbath, whether it’s on Saturday or Sunday – I’d really like to try to implement some of her ideas because besides church on Sunday the rest of my Sabbath is just like every other day and it shouldn’t be. The other chapter that really spoke to me was, “Not a Tchotchke in Sight: A Guide to Minimalism”, this has me wanting to go home and really pare down our belongings – as must I enjoy having all the books around me I know it’s not feasible to keep every. single. one. At the end of each chapter is the homework where you are guided to either download, for free, the worksheet from Valerie’s website or purchase the workbook to correspond with this book – I will admit I haven’t used either but will more than likely be going back to download the sheets, other recommended resources are also suggested.
One thing that did bother me was in the chapter, “Sermon Hall Pass: A Guide to Forgiveness” where the whole “judge not, lest thou be judged” is used. That said I’m all about not being offended at everything anyone says or does – Christian and non-Christian’s alike, but we are told to be aware of other people’s sins and to use the outline in Matthew to bring them back to fellowship and some Christians don’t like that (in regards to those who are true Believer’s, not for those who aren’t). Overall, this is a great book and I would so like to lead a study at my church for the women and older girls who would like to attend so as our church’s motto says, Love Christ, Love Others, Make Disciples we can learn to live and do that.
**I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

Review of 'The Finishing School' by Valerie Woerner
By LeAnne
The Finishing School takes things that are--for me especially--'head knowledge' and discusses the importance of truly LIVING OUT the life to which God has called me. Each chapter is set up as a guide to a specific area (9. Spontaneity Loves Structure: A Guide to Balance. 18. Buried in the Sand. A Guide to Awareness). Valerie Woerner takes examples from her life, and sets the framework for taking our lives and begin living intentionally. She points out both the importance of minimalism, while also giving validity to a flexible lifestyle. Rather than hit one extreme or another (which would lose this reader completely), her chapters express a need for balance in every area of my life as I run our household and seek heavenly perspective. The book itself helps you see the process for pruning, trimming, and refining your life in ways that are not only practical, but extremely doable.
This book can be read and absorbed into your life in a couple of ways. The first one--which is what I did--was read the book over a couple of weeks, highlighting the things that stood out and writing down other things that were helpful ideas. The second one--which I intend to do--involves completing the "Homework" part after each chapter. Here, Valerie has worksheets you can download. She also gives Recommended Resources after each topical chapter. This author has done her research! The third and final way you can read and soak in The Finishing School is to do it with a group of friends. Each chapter and its homework can be looked at one week at a time. There is some very rich potential to not only do the weekly chapter review and discussion, but to even expand into looking deeper at the Recommended Resources. While that isn't something I personally am interested in doing, I am absolutely certain that others--who treasure that fellowship & sincere desire to refine every area of their lives--would relish.

Inspirational and relatable guide to life.
By Jasmine @ the bookish mama
I've been in a funk. Stuck in a rut that is so deep that all I could see was the next step in front of me, but nothing else. Moving aimlessly in the endless routine of day in and day out as a working mother with no relief in sight.
I think that's why I absolutely adored this book. It's the book that I wish I had written because it was everything that I needed in my life right now. So much of what she wrote in this book resonated with me. Fellow book nerd, knowledge junkie? Check and check!
I've been following Valerie on Instagram (@valmariepaper) for awhile now. I've always found her posts not only beautiful, but inspirational. I love her prayer journals and have been eyeing them for a long time. There was a period of my life (early in my marriage and pre-kids), when I would diligently keep a prayer journal. It was probably the time of my life when I felt the closest to God. In all honesty, I miss it. I miss Him terribly. This book has inspired me to start a new one again.
What I appreciated about this book is that each chapter was a quick, succinct guide to different areas of your life: joy, friendship, self-control, margin, etc. My favorite guides were to habits, balance, and comparison because they are the current demons that are at the most forefront of my life right now.
Valerie writes in a way that is totally relatable, real, and at times humorous. It felt like sitting at a coffee shop with a close friend and bonding over common struggles of daily life. I think the Enemy wants nothing more than to make you think that you are alone in your daily trials and tribulations to make you feel isolated and like you're fighting the battles with your own sheer willpower and strength (or weaknesses, rather). It feels validating and refreshing to know that I am not alone and even though my journey and pursuit towards holiness in my walk with Christ will not be perfect, at least I know that I've got God on my side. I really don't think I'll ever be the same after reading this book and I'm thankful that I had the chance to read it through Litfuse. I am looking forward to the next steps in my journey as a Christ-follower, wife, mother, and woman. Thank you Valerie, for writing this book that spoke directly to my heart.
I zipped through this book a little faster than I would have liked because I didn't have "balance" in my life, but I plan on rereading it again, slower... to savor each chapter and read it more like a devotional. I highly recommend reading this book like a devotional. That way, you have time to let the lessons of each guide sink in. I can also see this being a great book to study together in a study group of women in a bible study/small group environment.
Lastly, I also appreciated that she also provided free homework worksheets and resources on her website to go deeper with the material. Please check out her website at: http://www.valmariepaper.com.
