Invaluable Guide for Television Writers
By Freudian Slips
Do you have an idea for a TV series? Maybe you just know you could write a great episode of your favorite series? Then get this book.

This is basically the career bible for anyone who wants to enter the television writing business. The 33 chapters are divided into 9 sections which cover what anyone entering the industry needs to know. The first section deals with how Hollywood works with insider info on staff writing vs. freelance, explaining spec scripts, and even tips for getting your work out there without it being stolen. The next sections cover the different genres of television writing including comedy, drama, made-for-TV, reality TV, Tween shows, etc. Other sections deal with the mechanics of writing a script so that your writing will appear professional when you submit it, creating compelling characters, how to pitch your script, and then how to develop the necessary job search skills like networking and interviewing.

Individuals pursuing a career in television writing already know that it's a competitive business-- following the advice in this book will definitely give you an advantage in the market. Excellent and highly recommended!

Literally Everything You Need To Succeed
By Quirky Girl
This should be called "Write For TV; A-Z"
This is a great book not only for those looking to work in the field of scriptwriting, but it's also helpful for fiction writers as much of the advice centers on different structure for drama/comedy as well as plots, character, and dialogue.
There is advice on how to break into field of TV, how to pitch, how to network, interview, plan.
One thing that makes Cook's stand out from many other books in this genre is that she advises what to expect AFTER you've landed the job.
Write To TV is well structured, organized, and most importantly, told in an easy going, friendly, and at time humorous manner.

A Must-Read for Beginning TV Writers
By Tamara Thorne
Whether you're looking into breaking into writing for television or movies or write books, there's something for you here. I'm a fiction writer myself and have only written a little for television - my partner for that work is a TV guy so I leave the business end to him and knew only the most basic facts about TV writing included in this very detailed book. Once I began reading, I honestly could not put this book down. It defined things about character and plot that I am already very familiar with as a novelist, but did so in a way that had me examining my knowledge in new and different ways. It's also great for helping any writer understand how to plot.

This detail-packed and very entertaining book is divided, logically, into fourteen parts. It begins with an overview of the television industry, then goes in-depth into writing for sitcoms, explaining script development for existing shows and creating new shows. It explains structure that applies to most any kind of writing then goes on to describe the differences between writing for single-camera and multi-camera shows. (It had never occurred to me to even wonder about that.) Writing for animation, late night, sketches and standup/improv are also covered. I especially liked the "week in a sitcom writer's life" to show what the job is really like.

Author Martie Cook then tells us all about prime-time drama requirements and defines plot-driven and character-driven dramas, then goes into research and how to talk to pros like cops, lawyers and doctors - and how to write for and create good ideas and scripts. Next, she sheds light on writing TV movies and mini-series. After that, Cook moves on to character creation, the tween market, writing good dialogue, and rewriting scripts.

Next up is what to expect when pitching, followed by writing for web series and all about reality TV. She winds the book up with a lot of information on the business side - agents, attorneys, managers - and how to write queries, what the Writers Guild is, and the pros and cons of a writing partnership. The final chapter is called "Getting Your Foot in the Door" - and that's exactly what it's about, from resumes, cover letters, phone etiquette and internships to getting interviews, what not to do, and the importance of networking.

This is a fabulous book for anyone wanting to write for television - and for writers in general. I learned a lot and will continue to scan through this book whenever I want a little inspiration and entertainment.
