Bitter enemies at the start of their journey, Captain Wasantha and the activist Kamala face innumerable threats from wild animals and a gang of deserters who make determined and violent efforts to capture the woman. The constant external danger, and their enforced dependence on each other, gradually erodes their enmity and distrust.
But a shocking revelation confronts Wasantha when he finally reaches Colombo. He is now compelled to choose between his friend and his country.
Nihal de Silva was a product of St. Joseph’s College and the University of Ceylon. He ran his own business dealing in water purification and the supply of bottled mineral water. In his own words, he had turned to writing fiction to keep himself occupied in his impending retirement. The author was a keen amateur naturalist with a special interest in avifauna and this first love is reflected in his writing. His other interests included golf, which he played badly, and angling, where his companions always seemed to have better luck. He was a passionate Rotarian.
Nihal de Silva lived in Colombo with his wife, Shirlene and their two sons. He was tragically killed in a landmine explosion at Wilpattu National Park on May 27, 2006.
The Road from Elephant Pass was awarded the Gratiaen Prize and the State Literary Award for the best Sri Lankan literary work in English for 2003. The book has been translated into Sinhala.
Now a major motion picture.

Thrilling from first page!

I read this book on kindle while traveling through Sri Lanka. Best thing I could have done! It made the book so much better (linguistically it's not exactly Shakespeare...) Also it made Sri Lanka easier to understand and enriched the experience there. For those who aren't traveling around Sri Lanka the book is still a good read and the story is PACKED with thrilling events and interesting wildlife "never-knew-you-wanted-to-know". The characters are really developing and their internal life is (at least in the second half of the book) very well depicted. Highly recommended.

Interesting tale that illustrates the extreme tension and violence of the Sri Lankan civil war. Very good introduction to nature and especially the animals of this country. Awkward translation/ awkward English and a sort of "macho" glorification of what it means to be a soldier. Worthwhile for students of this time in Sr Lankan history.
