Great Intro Book but not to deep

I was hoping this book would be a little deeper than it was into Sharepoint 2013 but it just wasn't. I do think it was a great introduction book to scratch all the surface topics. However you could probably find the information on the web through articles just as easily. Overall just not what I was looking for.

This book covers a ton of topics. Actually more like 10 tons of topics.

The book is broken down into 6 parts:
Planning for and Deploying SharePoint Server 2013
Administering and Maintaining SharePoint Server 2013
Securing, Protecting, and Optimizing SharePoint Architecture
Using SharePoint 2013 Technologies for Collaboration and Document Management
Leveraging Office Applications with SharePoint
Extending the SharePoint Environment

Covering so many topics has its pros and cons.

Pros include covering a wide variety of topics and they provide a lot of very helpful lists. Especially when comparing SharePoint 2013 Foundation, SharePoint 2013 Standard, and SharePoint 2013 Enterprise.

The lists are one of my favorite features of the book. They include List of SharePoint 2013 Service Applications, Hardware Requirements for the Various Server Roles of SharePoint 2013, Hardware Requirements for the Various Server Roles of SharePoint 2013, Sample Service Accounts for a Default SharePoint Install, Summary of Maintenance Tasks and Recommendations, Sample Small Virtual SharePoint Environment Deployment Specifications, Sample Medium-Sized Virtual SharePoint Environment Deployment Specifications, Service Accounts for a Default SharePoint Install, Service Applications Available in SharePoint Foundation 2013 Compared to SharePoint Server 2013, Templates Available in SharePoint Foundation 2013 and SharePoint Server 2013, Tools Available in a Document Library in Different Versions of SharePoint 2013, Guidelines for Using Versioning, Page Approval Workflows, and Content Approval in Document Libraries, and Governance Plan for Service Applications.

The book also covers topics I have not seen covered elsewhere. It covers Protecting SharePoint with Advanced Antivirus and Edge Security Solutions, Virtualizing SharePoint Components, SharePoint Foundation Versus SharePoint Server, and Safeguarding Confidential Data in SharePoint. The chapter I found most useful so far was SharePoint Foundation Versus SharePoint Server.

The biggest con is that the topics are not as in-depth as they need to be sometimes for field level use. An example would be the upgrade coverage. For example they cover a vanilla upgrade, but most upgrades are not going to go that smoothly. The cons do not really detract from the book because of the type of book it is. It covers far too much material to go into scenario based topics and I feel it goes in-depth enough to get you very familiar with the topics covered.

The Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Unleashed had some of the code and the scripts available for download, but none are available for this version yet.

Overall the book serves as a good introduction to a very wide variety of topics and goes to the level of depth needed to gain a thorough understand of the topic.

All in all I recommend this book for anyone involve with SharePoint administration.

I purchased this book in hopes of getting additional information on the new app model in the sp2013 environment. Instead I got a blurb of useless info that felt copied from the internet of what app model is with no setup help nor helpful troubleshooting information... Beyond that I haven't opened the book again as I feel I will get better info from youtube sadly.

I just received this book and Christopher Hart has done it again! This book is absolutely AMAZING! He shows you how to draw from basic eye and head template to drawing villains, from preteens to clothes and hairstyles. This book is a must for any who want to learn to draw Anime! Christopher Hart guides are the best

I have just started drawing again after many years, I knew that Anime would be the way to go, I didn't know how to get started, I found Christopher Hart collection of drawing books, (which I own about 7) and now I cant stop, it help me to understand all I need to kick start my career. Can not wait for more books.

11-year-old artist in the making

I bought this book for my artisticy inclined 11-year old daughter who has fallen in love with anime characters. I am a professional animator myself and this books reminds me of the things I learned while getting my fine arts degrees. I plan to go through it with her and help her understand how to create the characters' proportions and angles, and this book does a great job of introducing those concepts.

The book's quality exceeded my expectations for a paperback book at the below $20 price range. It's pages are very high quality paper. The book cover is made of a high grade material that won't tare easily or quickly get bent or misshapen.

The illustrations are large and clear and the steps to each are very clear and easy to follow. The colors are vibrant and exciting. There are loads of visuals and great images in this book. I love how it is broken into sections to explain how to make characters have different emotions, how to make lovable heroes or evil bruding villains. Or how to make clothing styles. And the images are large enough to trace with tracing paper so my daughter can begin to get a feel for the correct angles and proportions of the character's features.

I am extremely pleased with this drawing guide and will be seeking out more guides from this author and publisher in the future.

Pretty Spot-On for the most part...

This book has near-perfect translations from the amazing guitar work of Eric Johnson. I noticed a few errors here and there, a lot of it being wrong octave tones. A few of the notes are off when it comes to the solos and some of the chordings are rough to stretch to (although im sure Eric meant for them to be this hard, if you've ever watched him play). Regardless, this book is amazing and knowing that i can play Venus Isle all the way through brings a special kind of satisfaction :)

Awesome

I didn't realize how difficult these songs were. I have no idea if the solo transcriptions are accurate (by that I mean authentic to how EJ plays) because I can't play half of what's in this book. But the book is easy to follow and read. A select few can play these songs but everyone can benefit from learning licks in this book. Venus Isle is the best CD in my opinion.

NOTE: Heir of Novron contains the last two books in my Riyria Revelations series: Wintertide (#5) and Percepliquis (#6).
 
And so it comes to a close, a tale that banged around in my head for over fifteen years. My intention was to write a series that started out simply, but have mysteries deepen, character backgrounds revealed slowly, and stakes escalate across the entire tale. I must say I'm very happy with the final result, and Percepliquis is by far my favorite book of the series. This shouldn't be a huge surprise as I've said from the beginning that my intention was to make each book better than the one that came before. 

Constructing the series as I did was a risk.  After all, it means the first books will be the weakest links by design.  That really didn't matter when I started writing, because I had no intention on publishing.  My audience was myself, and a few close friends and family, so reading all the volumes was pretty much a guarantee. As that goal changed, I considered restructuring the books to a more traditional "front loaded" design but ultimately decided that the original approach provided the most satisfying read.  Yes, there will be those that drop out early who determine the book to "light" or "lacking depth," but my focus is on the opinion of readers who view the picture in its entirety, rather than just the first 1/3. 

As I write this it is mid-November 2012.  A full year since the release of Theft of Swords and more than ten-months since the final book.  I'm floored that all the books have remained on Amazon's Bestselling Historical Fantasy books since their release.  But what's more amazing is that Heir of Novron is routinely found on the following Top Rated Lists:

To be rated in the top 100 of all fiction titles on Amazon can only be described as surreal.  I want to publicly thank all those people who have not only read the books, but taken the time to leave a review which is the whole reason the book has made these lists.  I guess my decision to keep the series structure was a good one.

Many people have written me and asked, begged, and even pleaded to continue the series as they want more adventures with Royce and Hadrian. I of course had hoped that would be the case, but honestly, I never wanted to dream that may come true.  Although the series was carefully designed to begin and end where it has, I did have various spin-offs and ancillary stories that could be told. As it became apparent that there was a demand for more adventures, I put a poll on my blog offering various options for future works.

The overwhelming consensus was to go back in time and show the founding of Riyria and the earlier adventures of Royce and Hadrian.  To that end I've written a new series, The Riyria Chronicles and I'm pleased to announce that Orbit has once again agreed to release them.  At this time the books written are:

• The Crown Tower (Aug 1, 2013) - which explores the first assignment that Royce and Hadrian did together.
• The Rose and the Thorn (Sep 5, 2013) - which explores the actual founding of Riyria and introduces Albert Winslow (as liaison to the gentry), and Gwen DeLancy becoming the proprietor of The Rose and Thorn Tavern which acts as the duo's base of operations.

If you finish Heir of Novron and find yourself "jonsing" for more adventures with Royce and Hadrian, I hope you'll tune in for these next two books. I'm very pleased with how they came out, and even more importantly, my wife Robin loves them.  She is the barometer by which I decide such things and if her enthusiasm is any indication, I think you'll enjoy the ride.

After 20 years I have a new favorite series and Michael J

I have been reading for pleasure since the early 1980s and I have not been paid or given any incentive for this review. I have confirmed purchase of each of these books on Amazon for my Kindle Paperwhite and I am writing this review for all of the Riyria novels and will post this for each. Please see the authors’ notes for reading order of this series but this review is based on reading in chronological order:

Author Michael J. Sullivan has a gift. After 20 years I have a new favorite series and Michael J. Sullivan has another dedicated reader and fan. This series, and the writing style, takes me back to the old school days of Robert E. Howard in way… Each book stands on its own. It is a very clear story/adventure that starts and concludes in a single volume so it can be read one at a time or binged all at once. The thing that differentiates it is that the series, in its entirety, is also a single epic adventure that starts in The Crown Tower and concludes in Heir of Novron. So taken individually each book is excellent and as a complete epic it more than satisfies. Like others have stated as well I was sad to read the end of it simply knowing that this particular tale was ending while at the same time that ending had enough adventure, emotion, humanity, and twists and turns that I was also happy to read the final pages. As an example the end of Glen Cook’s The Black Company ended poetically and perfectly so too does the story of Riyria.

What I took away from this series was a story following the two main characters, Hadrian and Royce, and was about humanity, morality, pain and loss, redemption, family and brotherhood. The two main protagonists and nearly opposite sides of the same coin but that coin is an old tarnished, beaten, and used coin with its faces faded from the wear of life in a medieval fantasy world. There is no typical heroes journey, no larger than life heroics, no immortality of characters that often plagues the genre. These are characters who are nuanced and believable, so much so that some have complained it is not realistic that the two protagonists would be together at all. To any who thought that I say just read on… there is no mystical fate forcing them together or any overused fantasy tropes, there is just strong character design and development, written by an author with a gift for bringing his imagination to the printed page.

The author starts the seeds of the story in the first book and nothing is wasted or filler. Small scenes in one book, with characters you may or may not think to ever see again, but can have an impact further down the road. This is like real life. If you help someone on the street or donating to charity, you may just be doing something that will change the world someday. You will meet an excellent cast of secondary and supporting characters who may come and go in the story but while they are there they are real characters and create real moments in time. Whether you see the impact or the characters again I will not say anything to spoil the story but as far as the characters development and the story itself Michael J. Sullivan did not waste your time with stand-in or generic stereotypical filler roles.

The individual stories each touched upon different adventures… breaking into an impregnable tower, a high seas adventure, a dungeon crawl, etc, giving each book its own unique feel and never a retread. This works well with the overall storyline for the entire series as well and in the end the payoff is well worth your time and money spent.

In regards to reading order, the author suggests publishing order, and I can understand why, but I hate prequels. I do not like knowing where the end is before I read something, so I read in chronological order and I am glad that I did. Seeing the beginning gave me, personally, a better feel for where the characters came from to where they were when the final volume concluded. I am sure these books can be enjoyed either order so use your personal preference when choosing. I cannot rate these books in any kind of order of enjoyment because overall I have come to look at it as one volume or one story. There were no weak books or weak stories to my taste so I will not try to critique it down to arbitrary ratings based on personal preferences… you cannot judge the arts technically… only how they impact you and your enjoyment.

Give this series a try if you are looking for something a little different from the glut of current fantasy out there today.

Entertaining and fun, but shallow plot and poor character development

This is a review of the entire Revelations series. I had a fun time reading it, but in the end, the plot was very weak. It's difficult to go into detail without saying anything, but suffice it to say that my itch for good fantasy has not been scratched. I was not absorbed in the world, and I had a hard time getting attached to any of the characters.

The characters were highly unbelievable. The attempts at inserting love stories were boring at best and often difficult to believe or seemed horribly out of place. Nothing at all was realistic about Modina. Amilia's story was yawn-inducing. Arista felt like a plot device to make things happen when the characters seemed completely screwed. And everyone goes on and on about how Royce had this terrible life, but hardly any info on that is given. It is also stated constantly how scary Royce is, but I never really got that. I've always been a fan of authors showing me what a character is like instead of telling me, and Sullivan did not deliver.

You would think with how I'm talking about this book that I'm writing a one or two star review. But it was entertaining enough to give it three. I probably won't revisit this series, and I'm not really interested in reading the three prequel novels about Hadrian and Royce's backgrounds.

The bottom line is that this series didn't leave a strong impression on me one way or the other. But the journey was pleasant enough.

Why have I not read these books until now?

I'm spiraling into a world of depression now that this series is over. These books were just breath-taking. I hate that it finally had to end.

I purchased this book from Amazon on October 7, 2013 for $8.89. Again, this is much more than I would typically pay for a book. But when you find one that just sweeps you off your feet like this series did, WELL, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!

The Heir of Novron had me in tears clutching my heart. All the while I was laughing at the banter between Royce and Hadrian. Never was there a dull moment in this book...or series. I honestly couldn't put the book down. The times that I was forced to mingle with reality, all I could do was ponder what was about to happen.

Now that it's over, I'm left with wanting to know how everyone is handling the new world. The book ended the series perfectly, but it still leaves you wanting more.

I accidentally stumbled upon this series while looking for another book. All I can say is this was the best accident to have ever happened to me. (I'll be praying that there is something that allows us to see how everyone is holding up!)

It is a long, long way from Faith to Trust in the Lord. Some people spend their whole life's journey and never get there, while others seem to make it in a very short time. There is a story of a man laden with troubles. As he walks a canyon ledge deep in thought, he tries to figure out how to solve them. As he gazes over the canyon below, he begins kicking small stones over the ledge and watches them as they fall for what seems like a thousand feet. He continues to watch as one by one, they crash onto the canyon floor. Consumed with his troubles, he kicks another stone, but this time he loses his balance and falls. He tries to grab the ledge where he stood, but his hands are unable to take hold of anything that can save him. Directly below him, is a small branch growing out of the canyon wall. He falls on it and he manages to get a firm grip just in the nick of time. But now he is hanging by his hands over the rocky canyon floor. He has no idea how long the small branch will support him or how long he can hang on. He looks at the canyon ledge where he once stood and sees it is about fifteen feet above him and that the face is smooth rock. He is in a remote place in the wilderness and he knows there is no chance of someone coming by or hearing his cries for help. He knows he cannot climb up and he knows if he lets go, he will fall to his death. As he hangs there he cries out for the Lord to come and save him. The heavens seem to be silent for what seems an eternity, as he contemplates what will happen if he lets go or loses his grip. Over and over he cries out, "Lord, help me please, please, help me!" Then he hears a voice. It's not a loud voice. What he hears doesn't come with thunder and lighting, nor does it come as an earthquake. But instead, it comes as a small, familiar voice, almost as if it were from inside him. It is filled with love, peace and comfort. Amidst all his problems, his focus changes to the engulfing love he now feels inside. The voice says, "Do you believe in the Lord?" "Oh yes!" came his reply. "You know I believe, Lord!" "Do you believe that I am the Lord?" "Oh yes Lord! I can tell by the feeling within me, that it is you, Lord!" "Do you believe that I can save you?" came the voice for a third time. "Oh yes!" came his reply! "You know I believe you can save me!" Then the voice came again and said, "Then let go of the branch." About the Author
Samuel Jeppsen is a retired police officer who graduated “Number One Overall Recruit” in his academy class. He is a current police chaplain with the state police in Arizona. He has been in four police officer involved shootings and has written the book, “Think About it.” It is a collection of police stories and religious experiences he had while serving as a police officer for twenty-five years. He has ridden motorcycles for most of his life and has ridden through Mexico to Guatemala, Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula. He has ridden the Gulf of Mexico, the Baja Peninsula and the Pacific Coast Highway five different times. He rode in the 2010, Hoka Hey, the first, largest and most grueling Harley-Davidson motorcycle ride in the world, from Florida to Alaska. From there he rode back to Phoenix, Arizona. He was a professional Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Test Rider. He has lived and hunted in Alaska. Through his life long adventures on motorcycles, he now shares his true experiences of riding the roads and sleeping out. While doing so, he experienced many miracles and discovered many truths that have changed his life forever and have brought him closer to Christ. Through these exciting motorcycle experiences and some of his police experiences, he shares these truths in a way that is very inspiring. He now lives a life void of fear—thus the subtitle, “What Would You Give, to Never Be Afraid Again.” He has an impressive ecclesiastical background which coupled with his police background, enabled him to be invited to become one of the police chaplains for the state police. He is a gifted public speaker and has been asked to speak at several different public events, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Skip Fink Memorial. He was the guest speaker for the View Point Golf and Resort Veterans Day celebration and he was the Key Note Speaker at the graduation ceremony of Everest College in Phoenix. He was asked to serve on the Kino Junior High’s Student Improvement Advisory Council and has spoken in many religious settings. He has served as the Neighborhood Services Coordinator for the Town of Buckeye, Arizona. He relates well with young and old and has a genuine love for his fellowman.

One of the best books I've read in recent years!

Could not put this book down once I started reading. The author's use of scripture and related personal experiences just seemed to speak to my heart. I love how the book shows that first you must just even want to believe and you build up your faith from that. Eventually, you come to know and trust. Amazing truths so much in need in this day and age where so many are struggling to find themselves and their God. Anyone who is looking for words of wisdom and advice should get this book and read it. I give it an A+!

Peace and Grace

I retired after 25 total years serving my community as a police officer. I was lucky to have had this book suggested to me; once I started reading the book I could not stop. This book spoke to me and gave me clarity. I love Sam's love for Jesus and his desire to share that love with everybody. I know several people in my life who are looking for God and do not know where to start. This book will give them guidance on their journey. I am buying a book for all of them and I am gifting their hearts with Sam's faith.

Awesome Book !!!

As a retired police officer myself and spending 11 of those years on a police motorcycle, I felt as if I was riding with Samuel on his motorcycle adventures. The author obviously has a strong love for the Lord and his fellowman. This book helps us realize that we all have fears and doubts in our lives but that if we trust in the Lord and stop and listen to that quit voice in our head, that the lord is willing to show us the way.
