Well-Written Introductory Text

The book contains concepts and algorithms in the first half, and then lists (I think 3) distributed operating systems in the back as case studies. The book is very readable and entertaining, assuming you've had a course (or the equivalent) in (single machine) operating systems.
This book covers all major aspects of distributed operating systems at reasonable level of depth -- you can't expect too much detail if you're going to cover all the topics.
There's no examples of "real" code in the text, I think that's a good thing. There are a number of useful algorithms discussed in each chapter.
This book is aging, and a little of the information is already dated (7 years old).

Easy to read introduction to the subject

This book is a convenient alternative to a senior-level course in operating systems. I intend to buy Tanenbaum's other operating system book. It is very easy to read and refreshingly pithy. Unlike many technical books, which fill pages by reproducing online documentation as an appendix, every page was worth printing. The examples are complete enough to understand the core concepts but assume you have the intelligence not to need excessive handholding. References are provided for readers interested in learning more about specific concepts.

The major flaw with this book is that it is now more than 15 years old. I would like to see an updated version that takes into account some of the latest operating system research. That said, the concepts are fundamental ones and cover most of the issues discussed are still relevant today.

Outstanding book that illustrates in fine detail the experience of mustard gas during the Second World War. Explores interesting topics such as human experimentation; the relationship to cancer chemo therapy and ongoing environmental degredation, as well as the relationship of hunan experimentation to the veterans movement for compensation and recognition. Recommended for anyone interested in WWII, health history, environmental history and more. Great read!

Paolo Cadoni

Paolo joined the PRA (formerly FSA) in 2004 where he has held a succession of posts both in banking and insurance. He is currently a Technical Head of Department in the Prudential Policy Division leading on PRA's input into the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority s (EIOPA) Solvency II Committees and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Solvency and Actuarial Issues Subcommittee.

Since March 2013 Paolo has been the Chair of the IAIS ComFrame Field Testing Task Force which is leading the development of the IAIS Global Capital Standards. Paolo has also chaired the EIOPA Internal Models Committee since 2009.

Until March 2009 he was also responsible for the FSA's policy development and implementation of the internal model method (IMM) for counterparty credit risk for banks and investment firms. He also represented the FSA in the Overall Capital and Quantitative Impact Study Working Group of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and led the FSA's work on QIS5.

Prior to becoming a regulator Paolo worked as a financial modeller in the oil and power sector.

He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the ICMA Centre and an MSc in Econometrics from Southampton University

Title should be "... for NEWS Writers and Editors"

With a different title I would have given this book five stars, and I would highly recommend it for newsrooms.

But the majority of the world's writers and editors do not work in newsrooms. They do not write news articles. They write web pages or annual reports for corporations or books on software or educational materials or white papers on technical topics or corporate policy statements or publicity pieces -- or a thousand other kinds of writing, often with audiences just as large as a newspaper's circulation.

The problem with this book, in other words, is not the quality of its entries, but their selection. The book has lots of help for accurate spelling of proper names, but surprisingly little help with topics that today are either ubiquitous or ubiquitous for large swaths of society.

Under "E," for example, you will find an entry for "Elliot, Denholm" with the correct spelling of that actor's name. But you won't find an entry on "email" discussing whether the preferred spelling is hyphenated ("e-mail"). Nor will you find any guidance on "e-commerce" (or eCommerce or E-commerce or any of a number of other variants). You will (thank goodness?) find the correct spelling of "Edgware Road," the London street and Underground station.

Under "H" you will find the correct spellings of Harper's Bazaar, Harpers Ferry, Harper's Magazine and Hartsfield-Jackson (note the hyphen!) Atlanta International Airport. Bottom line: This is not a bad book; it's just a book primarily for newspeople. It should have been promoted as such.

The two stars (rather than none) is for the fact that there are lots of entries that are actually useful (equable vs. equitable; precipitant, precipitate, and precipitous; stanch vs. staunch), and for the most part they are very clearly written. And when an entry calls for advice -- see, for example, the entry on "hopefully" -- Bryson's taste and judgment are sound.

If you're a fan of Bill Bryson's wit and humor, then you might be disappointed. This is a reference book. And it's a good one. Which, to me, means it's useful, and in this case, dry is good.

But if I have to read reference book, I want it to be written by Bill Bryson. Bryson is a master writer. This book reflects that.

This book is FUN and so helpful. Keep it by my bed and read a few pages before falling asleep. I keep learning more wonderful and unique facts about language, about life, about so many things. Try it. You'll love it!
